New skincare tech counts your spots and gives you dermatologist advice for free

Anyone that's ever suffered from acne will know just how debilitating the condition can be.

Effects of leaving it untreated can last a lifetime  – whether it's psychological damage or actual skin scarring.

The problem is, going to a doctor about skin problems can seem daunting, and dermatologist fees are enough to put the average person off.

Thankfully, French pharmacy skincare brand La Roche-Posay may have just found a solution to help you on your battle to beat the blemishes without breaking the bank – with their new Effaclar Spotscan tech.

Compatible with Android and Apple phones, the tool (not an app as you don't need to download it) is the first free diagnosis tech of its kind to rate the severity of your acne and give you practical dermatologist advice on the sort of treatment it would respond best to.

How does it work?

Using your phone, head to the Boots website where the link to scan is exclusively available here.

Spotscan will then take three images of your skin to get an accurate reading (make sure you do this in good lighting), before it counts and compares your blemishes to a database of 6,000 dermatologist patient photos of all ethnicities.

From there it will rate the severity of your acne 0 to 4+, before giving you specific expert advice and product recommendations that your skin would benefit from.

If the tool believes your acne could potentially leave scarring or longer-term effects, it will also be able to re-direct you to a specialist.

The launch of this new tech comes after studies show acne affects 80% of teenagers and 40% of adults – and many of these sufferers won't seek out advice from an expert out of embarrassment or costs.

Hopefully this tech will be a first step to sufferers solving their skincare problems for good.
