  • Celebrity personal shopper and stylist revealed where your pants should sit
  • She explained the difference in the hem of pants makes you look long and thin
  • Slim tapered pants should sit a finger space above the ankle – or be cropped

The hem of a trouser length can make or break our proportions, particularly if you consider yourself short or short of leg.

But whether you’re wearing cropped, wide-legged, flared, slim or tapered trousers it’s important to realise that they should all sit differently if you want your legs to look as long and slim as possible.

Alarna looked at three different trouser lengths – the cropped length, the slim or tapered length and wide leg (pictured)

CROPPED TAPERED PANTS

The first type to think about are slim or tapered pants, which Alarna explained are ‘designed to show off your shoes and ankles’.

‘A slim or tapered pair of pants is the main style of pant that most work trousers are these days,’ she wrote on her blog.

‘But before you dismiss the slim cut, remember that the beauty of the slim or tapered pant is that it skims our figure and doesn’t cling to it like skinny jeans do, it’s a very flattering, elongating pant style.’

Alarna said there are two lengths you can choose from when looking for a slim leg trouser: either a cropped style or one that falls ‘a finger space above the ankle’.

While the personal shopper said that the cropped length might not be a hit with some women, she added that it works especially well with shorter and more petite women with a nude shoe or heel.

Alarna said the slim leg style should fall ‘a finger space above the ankle’ (pictured), and these can work with flats as well as heels as they open the lower leg and create an illusion of length

SLIM LEG TAPERED PANTS

The second type of slim leg pants is one that sits just above your ankle:

‘The finger space above the ankle fit will open the lower leg up and create the look that there’s more length there than there actually is,’ Alarna said.

The great thing about longer tapered pants is that you can get away with wearing flats and still look tall.

However, she added, it’s important that they sit in the right place on your leg – so that your lower half doesn’t look boxy.

WIDE LEGGED PANTS

If you’re looking to wear wide-legged pants, Alarna said the most important thing to remember is that you should never show your ankle.

‘These pants are designed not to show your ankle, in fact, showing your ankle in these cuts (unless they’re culottes) will shorten your appearance,’ she said.

This type of trouser is ‘designed to end on the middle of your foot without too much creasing or buckling around the ankle’.

Getting them re-hemmed professionally, she explained, should cost between $15 and $25.

‘But remember if the pants you have are long on you and they’re flared or bootleg, you shouldn’t get too much off them because you’ll lose the shape of the pant.’

Speaking previously with FEMAIL, Alarna revealed the tailoring tips that will have you looking like an A-lister – and the three tweaks you can make for perfect style.

‘They [personal stylists] will buy a garment to fit the client’s widest part and alter the rest,’ Alarna explained.

‘It seems super expensive and a waste of hard-earned money, but when each item you own fits perfectly, it makes such a difference to your overall look.’

Alarna elaborated, by way of asking when was the last time you saw a celebrity adjust their clothing.

‘Some of us honestly walk around in clothing that twists or bunches because we think “that’s just my body shape, it will always do this”,’ she said.

‘It won’t, gorgeous, your curves just need hugging in the right places.’

What are the tweaks you can make for perfect style?

* Change the hemline: When a pair of pants is hemmed to the right length, it can make your legs look longer, even when you’re wearing flat shoes. Slim fitting pants that taper in around the ankle should stop around the top of your ankle bone. Pants that are wide-leg or don’t fit in close around the foot should just touch the top of your foot.

* Sleeves: If you find you’ve always got bunching sleeves or sleeves passing your wrist or covering your hand, you need to shorten them to lift your posture and neaten your appearance. Aim to fit your sleeve to the crease between where your hand meets your wrist.

* Shortening: When wearing a dress or a skirt that is knee length, ensure the dress is ending in a place that makes you feel long in the leg. If a dress is too long, it can shorten our appearance.

When it comes to the alterations you can make to steal the style from the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker, Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett and more, Alarna said there are several game-changing alterations you can make.

The first change is to the hemline of your outfits:

‘When a pair of pants gets hemmed to the right length, your legs look longer even if you are wearing flat shoes,’ Alarna said.

‘Slim fitting pants that taper in around the ankle should stop around the top of your ankle bone. Pants that are wide-leg or don’t fit in close around the foot should just touch the top of your foot.’

The second change you can make to instantly look better in clothes is to the sleeves:

‘If you find you’ve always got bunching sleeves or sleeves passing your wrist and covering your hand, a simple sleeve shortening will lift the look of your posture and neaten up your appearance,’ Alarna said.

‘Aim to fit your sleeve to the crease between where your hand meets your wrist.

The last change to make to your own clothes at home is shortening:

‘When wearing a dress or a skirt that is knee length, ensure the dress is ending in a place that makes you feel long in the leg,’ Alarna said.

‘Often off-the-rack knee-length dresses are a touch long and can shorten our appearance.’
