  •  ‘What works for men also works for women,’ he said ahead of the launch

  •  BA said a pilot’s jacket and trousers will be worn by both sexes

British Airways is to provide gender-neutral uniforms for its staff as part of the company’s centenary celebrations, designer Ozwald Boateng has revealed.

More female flight attendants could be encouraged to ditch their famous navy-blue skirts for trousers after the Savile Row tailor was hired to bring a modern twist to the uniform, with jackets and trousers being made unisex.

A company insider said: ‘The new trousers are designed to be a lot more appealing to women.’

New uniform: Gender-neutral uniform is being rolled out among BA staff with female attendants being encouraged to wear trousers instead of skirts

British Airways only allowed female cabin crew to wear trousers in 2016, and only a few currently take advantage of this, mostly on long-haul flights. Strict rules also require make-up and ladder-free tights for women.

Boateng, who recently made Luther star Idris Elba’s wedding suit, will reveal designs for 32,000 BA staff this autumn. Workers who have to wear the uniform, including engineers, ground crew and baggage-handlers, will have a say on how it looks.

The 52-year-old designer told The Mail on Sunday: ‘What works for men also works for women. It’s about choice for everyone, wearing what they want so they are most comfortable.’

A source at British Airways, which turns 100 years old on August 25, said: ‘There will be some garments worn by both genders, for example, a pilot’s jacket and trousers.’

BA has previously hired a string of famous designers, including Paul Costelloe, Hardy Amies and Julien Macdonald, maker of the current uniforms.
