‘Several people injured’ as ‘roof collapses at Pontins holiday park’

‘It was like a terror attack’: Eighteen people are hurt and six hospitalized at Pontins holiday park in Somerset after a wall with ‘lighting, rigging and TV screens attached’ fell onto guests

  • The incident happened at the ‘Fun Factory’ entertainment venue around 6pm
  • Avon and Somerset Police were on the scene shortly after with ambulances
  • Police say a number of people have minor injuries but nobody was seriously hurt 

Eighteen people were injured and six taken to hospital after a roof partially collapsed at Pontins holiday resort in Somerset this evening.

Avon and Somerset Police were on the scene at Brean Sands Holiday Park in Burnham-on-Sea shortly before 6.30pm this evening, following reports that a ceiling had collapsed.   

‘A number of people suffered minor injuries in the incident but thankfully no one was seriously hurt,’ the constabulary tweeted. 

Following a search of the scene police confirmed nobody was left trapped under the debris.  

Witness Andrew Haughton posted the photograph of Twitter, writing: ‘large heating vent and part of ceiling at Pontins Brean sands just collapsed over the crowd / audience’

South Western Ambulance Service wrote on Twitter: ‘We sent our HART team, 2 critical care teams, 6 ambulances and 3 officers. 

’18 patients were treated with 6 being taken to hospital. Excellent multi-agency response.’

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service told Somerset Live that it is believed that some ducting had collapsed. 

Witnesses reported seeing fire engines, police cars and ambulances on the site.   

Thomas Gorman, told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the incident happened inside the ‘Fun Factory’ entertainment venue.

Pontins guest Michelle Lewis, 47, told Bristol Live: ‘It looked like a terror attack… They’re taking the injured into a separate building.’

Police confirmed there were some minor injuries but that nobody was seriously injured. The cause of the accident is still unclear 

‘I think Pontins will probably ask people to go home but I don’t know yet.’ 

Laura Robinson wrote on Twitter: ‘My family and I have just witnessed the ceiling come down in the clubhouse across families!’ 

Robinson told the BBC around 100 people had been inside the building at the time. 

The holiday park popular among families with young children would have been particularly busy this week over the half term break.
