Bangs are an addiction. When you have them, you want them to grow out. When you don’t have them, you want to cut them. It’s a style that’s inherently chic, youthful—and extremely fussy. Bangs need to be washed everyday and trimmed frequently, but when you have them your hair is always styled. Women have long had a love-hate relationship with bangs, which is why we’re always asking one another if we should “get” them.
To help answer the question, we tapped GHD ambassador, celebrity hairstylist, and TRESemmé Global Stylist Justine Marjan to cut bangs on 16 different women. No matter the hair type—curly, straight, wavy, long, short, etc—or the age, all 16 women walked away with a different take on bangs. While Marjan thought some women would look best with full bangs, others got side-swept layers, long ’70s fringe, or even baby bangs. See what all the women look like in the video above.
Marjan’s best bang styling tip? You can use a beveled flat iron to curl long bangs away from the face, or to help short bangs lay flat. To maintain the style, be sure to get regular trims at least once a month. Most salons offer free bang trims in-between regular appointments. Finally, a dry shampoo can save greasy bangs on the fly, but it’s best to at least wash them every day to avoid greasy roots. Hack it by bending over a sink and scrubbing them with a little shampoo to avoid getting the rest of your hair wet.
