For their latest campaign, Dove encourages everyone to fully embrace the beauty of their skin. The new campaign is titled ‘Make peace with dry skin’ and it encourages conversations about what it means to love and live in your own skin — specifically, for those of us living with a skin condition.
Mercedes Matz, one of the many real faces of the ‘Make peace with dry skin’ shared her struggle with eczema on Instagram. “You see perfect skin all over social media. But not everyone has perfect skin — whether it’s eczema, psoriasis, acne, or whatever, the more we show it, the more people will accept it. Nobody is perfect, she posted.”
I’m so excited that I finally get to share!! 2017 was the year of Vulnerability and Self Love! For as long as I can remember I’ve lived with Atopic Dermatitis (Severe Chronic Eczema) and it affected every aspect of my life: my mood, health, interactions with people, the clothes that I wore…etc. I was always so ashamed of my condition and how I looked which caused me to develop severe anxiety. I was extremely depressed and I often resorted to self medicating because of how much physical pain I was in. I was constantly sick and hospitalized often due to complications. Only my closest friends knew but I often suffered alone. The beginning of 2017 I made a vow to myself to not succumb to my condition and live in my truth. I found my voice with @Dove who gave me the ultimate gift of allowing me to share my story with the world! I, along with 5 other magical women are the faces of their new #DermaSeries skincare line which focuses on REAL women with REAL skin conditions! Knowing that I can represent millions of people who also live with a skin affliction and help make them comfortable with themselves brings me to tears. I hope that by me displaying my insecurities for the world to see shows just how human and perfectly imperfect I am. Once you set your own standard of beauty, it’s impossible to want to be like anyone other than yourself! These new products are AMAZING (Fragrance & Steroid Free) and can be bought wherever Dove products are sold! && you just might see me ? Check the link in my bio to read my story ❤️
After creating an online social community on Instagram, Dove is also sharing the stories of real women living with skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. The campaign is a segue into advertising for their new Dove DermaSeries line, which includes specially formulated lotions, balms, and creams to heal and soothe those with extremely dry and dry skin conditions.
Thank you for sharing your inspiring journey with us, Kennedy. “Growing up as a young girl, (I was eight at the time), I was still getting to know myself and who I was as a person. At eight is when I got Vilitilgo (a skin condition in which you lose pigmentation in your skin) and on my face is where it all started. Kids can be mean at that age and I did get picked on by a few. When I would walk into stores or just be in public in general I would try to use my hand as a shield to cover up my face, or look to the floor so people wouldn’t notice me and avoid contact with others. Fast forward to my high school days where I began to gain confidence in myself. I told myself it was time for a new beginning and it was time to stop hiding from the world – it was time to show the world my true beauty. I am confident #InMyOwnSkin in today’s world. No more hiding my face, instead I flaunt it for the world to see.”
With 1 in 4 Americans living with some sort of skin condition, the campaign aims to be more inclusive and represent those who are rarely seen in advertising or in beauty conversations.
Dove has also created a way for you to share your own skin stories. You can create your own image here to share on social media and participate in the campaign.
