Arsenal star forced off on stretcher during Europa League semi-final

Arsenal skipper Laurent Koscielny has been forced off on a stretcher during the Europa League clash with Atletico Madrid.

The Frenchman went down with nobody around him early on in the semi-final second leg.

Koscielny immediately punched the turf and clutched his Achilles as his teammates looked on in concern.

Aaron Ramsey and Granit Xhaka were among those attempting to concern Koscielny, whose reaction suggested the injury was a serious one.

The anguish on his face was clear as he received treatment before being carried off on a stretcher.

Calum Chambers replaced the Frenchman as Koscielny left the field to applause from all four sides of the stadium.

His hopes of making the World Cup are now in serious doubt, although the severity of the injury is currently unclear.

The scores were tied at 1-1 ahead of the second leg at Wanda Metropolitano.

Arsenal were already without Henrikh Mkhitaryan for the semi-final encounter after the Armenian was left on the bench.

Alex Iwobi, who picked up a knock in the defeat to Manchester United, was also among the substitutes.
