Hot French artist Laure Prouvost surprised a well-heeled crowd at a dinner thrown in her honor by the New Museum and the Alexander McQueen fashion house.
Explained an attendee at the NextGen Dinner, “She shocked the crowd when she accepted her award by explaining that when her grandmother was alive, she had regularly tied herself to an airplane and floated through the clouds stark naked.”
She explained that the small plane was piloted by her grandfather.
But museum artistic director Massimiliano Gioni quickly put the speech in context by explaining to his tablemates that Prouvost’s work is about “blurring fiction and reality.”
Prouvost, who launched her first US solo show at the New Museum in 2014, will represent France at the Venice Biennale next year.
Guests at the dinner, many decked out in McQueen, included Rupert Friend and wife Aimee Mullins, Selby Drummond, Nell Diamond, Fabiola Beracasa, Maria Sharapova and current beau Alexander Gilkes, Mia Moretti, Stacey Bendet, Bettina Prentice and Huma Abedin as well as museum director Lisa Phillips.
Flora Starkey flew in from London to create floral arrangements.
