Cate Blanchett stepped out in a very familiar dress at Cannes

Actress Cate Blanchett wowed on the red carpet on the opening day of Cannes Film Festival in a black lacy gown by Armani Prive, but to the eagle-eyed among you, it may look familiar.

The dress is actually a repeat from the 2014 Golden Globes , when Cate won Best Actress for Blue Jasmine.

She even styled it in a similar manner, with an updo and statement earrings by Chopard.

Chosen to be the jury president of the 71st festival, Cate showed her support for this year’s Green Carpet Challenge – the sustainable fashion initiative set up by Livia Firth.

Cate said: ‘From couture to t-shirts, landfill is full of garments that have been unnecessarily discarded. Particularly in today’s climate, it seems wilful and ridiculous that such garments are not cherished and re-worn for a lifetime."

It makes perfect sense given that celebrities usually wear a new gown or outfit for every awards show or photo call they attend.

It seems a shame to waste the craftsmanship and fabric that goes into making these show-stopping dresses and we reckon Cate will be one of many stars, who look to more sustainable fashion in future.

"I think the stigma around re-wearing a dress is arbitrary and makes no sense," says Cate’s styling partner Elizabeth Stewart.

"It’s a rule that will fade away like the ‘no white after Labour Day’ rule. We don’t visit the Louvre expecting a new masterpiece each time. True beauty and art endures. I cannot support the waste of perpetuating a “one time only” rule for a beautiful gown and thought this was a great forum to demonstrate that."
