Chicago City to Sue Jussie Smollett Over Unpaid Cost of Fake Attack Investigation

AceShowbiz -City officials in Chicago, Illinois are planning to sue actor Jussie Smollett after he failed to cover the costs of the investigation into an alleged attack against him by a Thursday evening deadline.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who is convinced the “Empire” star is guilty of disorderly conduct for reporting a hoax to police, set the deadline last week (ends March 29), a day after Smollett was allowed to walk free from custody with all charges against him wiped.

Mayor Emanuel demanded he repay the city of Chicago $130,000 (£99,000).

Shortly after the deadline passed on Thursday, a spokesperson for the city released a statement to news outlets, stating plans to sue the actor.

“Mr. Smollett has refused to reimburse the City of Chicago for the cost of police overtime spent investigating his false police report on January 29, 2019,” the statement read. “The Law Department is now drafting a civil complaint that will be filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County.”

“Once it is filed, the Law Department will send a courtesy copy of the complaint to Mr. Smollett’s L.A. based legal team.”

Under Chicago by-laws, city bosses can seek over $390,000 (£298,000) from the actor.

Representatives for Smollett have yet to comment on the latest development.

He was initially indicted on 16 felony charges for allegedly staging a racist and homophobic attack on himself on January 29.
