Donald Trump pardons jailed gran after Kim Kardashian campaigned for her release

President Donald Trump has pardoned Alice Johnson after Kim Kardashian campaigned for her release from prison.

Mum-of-three Kim campaigned for the release of Alice Marie Johnson, who is serving a life sentence at the Aliceville Correctional Facility, in Alabama.

The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star met with the US leader recently to ask him to release her.

Now, she’s being pardoned and her paperwork is being prepped, according to CNN.

Kim took to Twitter to celebrate the news, writing: "BEST NEWS EVER!!!!"

She added: "So grateful to @realDonaldTrump, Jared Kushner & to everyone who has showed compassion & contributed countless hours to this important moment for Ms. Alice Marie Johnson. Her commutation is inspirational & gives hope to so many others who are also deserving of a second chance.

"I hope to continue this important work by working together with organizations who have been fighting this fight for much longer than I have and deserve the recognition."

Kim tweeted about Alice’s case last year, winning the great-gran national news attention after she was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1997.

She was convicted of money laundering and drug conspiracy charges. It was her first offence.

It was one week ago today that Kim visited the White House to meet with Trump to discuss Alice’s case.

According to reports, Kim had been in talks with Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner – Trump’s senior advisor – to secure the release of 62-year-old Alice, who has spent 20 years behind bars for a non-violent drug offence.

Kim was a supporter of Trump’s political rival Hilary Clinton, and even made her husband Kanye West clarify that he didn’t believe in everything Trump says and does after he sent out a string of tweets showing love for the US leader, but it’s said that Trump is on board with the cause because Ivanka supports it too.

Alice wrote Kim a thank you note after she first brought her case to public attention.

Kim has already set her sights on freeing another person as well.

Last week, she tweeted about Matthew Charles, from Nashville, who was released from prison early in 2016 after a sentence reduction, only to be sent back to finish his sentence after a court ruled an error had been made.

Kim wrote: "This man is sentenced to 35 yrs for selling drugs. He serves over 21 yrs, is released, finds a job, new relationship, starts a new life, & now is being sent back for another 10 yrs because the original release was an error. This man has completely rehabilitated himself. So sad"

After news that Alice would be pardoned broke, people took to Twitter to celebrate Kim’s achievement.

Kathy Grffin said: "My friend @KimKardashian got more done in one meeting with Trump than feckless has in her entire time at the White House."

After her meeting at the White House last week, Kim sent out a string of tweets about Alice and her hope that she’d be released from prison soon.

She wrote: "Happy Birthday Alice Marie Johnson. Today is for you

"I would like to thank President Trump for his time this afternoon. It is our hope that the President will grant clemency to Ms. Alice Marie Johnson who is serving a life sentence for a first-time, non-violent drug offense.

"We are optimistic about Ms. Johnson’s future and hopeful that she —and so many like her—will get a second chance at life."
