Eleanor Tomlinson would be ‘upset’ if Aidan Turner is paid more

‘I should be paid the same as Poldark’: Eleanor Tomlinson wades into the equal pay row as she says it is ‘no longer OK’ that Aiden Turner earns more than her

They have starred as the fiery Ross and Demelza on the hit BBC One series since 2015.

And Eleanor Tomlinson has revealed she would be disappointed if she discovered Aidan Turner was paid more for Poldark, as she feels they play ‘equal lead roles’.

Embarking on a stunning cover shoot for Red, the 26-year-old admitted she doesn’t think they are paid the same – but would still be ‘upset’ if she found out the gender gap had not been closed.

Salary disparity has been widely discussed in the industry recently, after Claire Foy publicly addressed her pay difference with co-star Matt Smith for The Crown.

Giving her own view, Eleanor admitted she would be hurt if she found out Aidan was paid more, as she feels they have an equal presence onscreen.

When asked if she and the Irish actor were paid the same, she simply said: ‘My guess is no.

‘And while at the beginning that might have been OK – he was a bigger star than me – now I don’t think so. We’re equal leads of the show, so I’d be pretty upset if the gap hadn’t closed.’

Despite their potential disagreement on salary, Eleanor added that she and Aidan were really good friends, and often tease each other about their roles.

She went on: ‘We’re great mates, although we do row. We row about everything – usually our characters. We’re both ridiculously protective of them and squabble like an old married couple.’

Revealing her co-star is a bit of a joker on set, she added: ‘Usually it’s one of us saying that our character wouldn’t behave a certain way. Aidan loves everything being his [character’s]. But then he loves to wind me up.’

Poldark first hit screens in 2015, and found immediate success – with the finale of the third season attracting a huge 6.1 million viewers last year.

However, while the show is packed with drama and romance, it was a scene of hunky Aidan without his shirt on that caught the most attention – to the actor’s annoyance.

Reflecting on the famous moment, Eleanor also admitted the reception to his physique had been infuriating, as viewers stopped talking about the drama they had created.

‘It was all people could talk about!’: Eleanor also admitted the reception had been infuriating, as viewers stopped talking about the drama they had created on screen

‘It was all people could talk about,’ she said. ‘And when you make eight hours of television and people can only remember two scenes, you’re like, ‘Oh come on.’

‘But I get it!’ Like, don’t get me wrong. I’m looking, going, ‘Sure, yeah. I’m with you ladies.’ But I can see why he got frustrated with it.’

Eleanor discussed her time on Poldark during the stunning shoot with Red, which saw her race around a tropical garden in a billowing ball gown, and pose amongst a selection of summer flowers.

Styling her hair into loose waves and opting for minimal make-up, the actress displayed her striking natural beauty to all as she beamed widely for the cameras.

On from the success of Poldark, the redhead is now preparing for the release of French biographical drama Colette, which co-stars Keira Knightley and Dominic West.

Eleanor stars as the novelist’s lover in the flick, which she was daunting but an amazing experience as a young actress.

She said: ‘There’s a lot of sex, which I was really nervous about, but I needn’t have been because Keira is so brilliant.

‘She rules the set and holds a power over everything. For me it was eye opening – it was because of her that we had options.’
