Emmanuel Petit recalls Arsenal players’ shot downing contest

Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has told how he was ‘shocked’ by the drinking culture when he joined Arsenal.

The Frenchman spent three years with the Gunners, forming part of the famous 1998 double winning side.

He later played for Barcelona and Chelsea before he retired in 2004.

However, on arriving in England, the World Cup winner said it was the booze culture that shocked him most.

"The alcohol and booze culture really shocked me.

"It starts when you are a teenager," Petit said in a reddit Q&A .

"When I first came to London for Arsenal, it was Christmas here. And we had a party with all of the players.

"We went into a fashionable nightclub, and we went for dinner and the night.

"As soon as I arrived, the English players were already drunk and doing a competition on who could take the most shots..

"So you can understand how difficult that was for me. I’m not a big boozer. I will let you guess who won."
