England 2-1 Tunisia player ratings as Harry Kane and Jordan Henderson impress

Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions left it late. Very late. But never bet against Harry Kane.

Energetic England were full of running in the first period and deservedly took the lead when Harry Kane stabbed home.

But after Kyle Walker gave away a needless penalty – which Ferjani Sassi stroked home – they laboured in the Volograd heat.

But there was still many plus points – and missed chances – for Southgate’s men, which Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson very impressive

Here’s how the players rated…

Pickford 7

Got a hand to Sassi’s penalty but unlucky not to keep it out. Otherwise a largely decent display.

Walker 5

You may think the penalty against him was soft. But why is he swinging his arm like that? Also too lax trying to help Maguire out of trouble midway through the first half.

Maguire 6

Aside from his 26th-minute error, largely good with his distribution. Always picked out the right back and always confident bringing the ball out of defence.

Stones 6

How on earth did he miss his kick in front of goal with a golden opportunity to put England back into the lead shortly before half time?

Young 7

The right call at left wing-back. Solid defensively, drifted in-field to help protect the back four. Provided the corner for the goal.

Trippier 7

Great ball over the top which Lingard could somehow only push onto the post. More of his decent deliveries.

Henderson 9

Tested the substitute keeper with a sizzling, powerful strike in the 17th-minute. Stroked the ball around well in the middle

Alli 6

In the groove from the outset, found the space intelligently to open up the Tunisia defence. Tracked back to prevent Tunisia getting into the game.

Sterling 6

Missed another sitter. The Tunisia defence couldn’t handle either his speed or his trickery. But he just can’t score. Still worth his place though.

Lingard 6

Will wonder how on earth he didn’t stick his second-minute sitter away. Had more gilt-edged chances. Not like him to fluff them.

Kane 9

Classic trademark, close-range goal-poaching. Twice. Wanted a hat-trick like Cristiano Ronaldo and is off the mark here. And what a goal to win it.

Rashford for Sterling (68) 6

Loftus Cheek for Alli (80) 6

Hassen 4 (Ben Mustapha 15, 6), S. Ben Youssef 6, Meriah 6, F. Ben Youssef 6, Maalouf 6, Bronn 6, Skhiri 6, Sliti 6 (Ben Amor 73, 5), Sassi 6, Badri 5, Khazri 5.
