Fashion maven Fern Mallis only landed legendary society photographer Bill Cunningham for her long-running 92Y series after a fashion near-emergency.
“I saw him at the CFDA Awards and I was wearing this chiffon [dress] that I just got in from India,” she recalled at the 92Y Gala on Monday.
“We were talking and someone knocked him and he spilled his vodka and soda on me. He was catatonic — he said, ‘In 40 years, I have never done this . . . What can I do? Can I buy you a new outfit or dry-clean it? I will do anything you want!’ And I said, ‘Will you do the Y?’”
After years of refusals, the shy lensman finally agreed to appear.
