The mystery of the famous Spice Girls chant in Spice Up Your Life has been solved – with Geri Halliwell revealed the meaning of the mantra today.
On the day that four of the five Spice Girls announced a 2019 tour, Geri tweeted: “Hai Si Ja hold tight!”, a lyric from their 1997 hit.
Over the years there’s been much speculation about the chant, which is yelled out at the end of the song by the girls.
Many people believed it to be “I see ya” Or “Hi C ya” but with one of the original five members now writing it out we can *deep dive alert* get to the bottom of what it actually means. And it’s truly international.
“Hai” is yes in Japanese, “Si” is yes in Italian or Spanish and “Ja” is yes in Germany. So what they’re actually saying, multi-lingually, is “Yes yes yes, hold tight!” So it’s a triple positive affirmation, essentially.
It’s not the first time they’ve chatted in other languages in their songs. “Hasta manana” – see you later” – they sang in Viva Forever.
Meanwhile Geri – when she went solo – of course flirted with a bit of Spanglish in her “yeah, I’m actually bilingual?” tropo-pop hit Mi Chico Latino. “What a dream, sweet and small / I don’t know, I don’t know,” she rapped in Spanish, making fans think she might have missed a few classes from her language night-course.
Earlier today, the four-piece revealed that they will be visiting Manchester, Coventry, Sunderland, Edinburgh, Bristol and London.
The girls announced the news on Instagram , posted a video with the caption: "Breaking Spice news… Tickets on sale Saturday 10.30am
#GirlPower #FriendshipNeverEnds ."
They confirmed the news in a press release, announcing: "“We are beyond excited to be reuniting next year for a stadium tour!
"Bringing girl power and our message of friendship and love back to the stage feels more relevant than ever. We hope everyone can join us for one big Spice Girls party!“
The hotly-anticipated tickets go on sale this Saturday at 10.30am at Ticketmaster and Gigsandtours , and are expected to sell like hot cakes. Or, as Geri might say, “tortas calientes”.
