Singer Halsey is criticizing the hotel industry for its lack of inclusion in their shampoo options.
The “Love Is Madness” singer, who is biracial (but is often assumed to be white), insisted that the shampoo choices in hotels are not acceptable for many of their guests.
“I’ve been traveling for years now and it’s been so frustrating that the hotel toiletry industry entirely alienates people of color,” she tweeted. “I can’t use this perfumed watered down white people shampoo. Neither can 50% of [your] customers. Annoying.”
She continued: “I’m fortunate enough to be financially in a position to do so, but POC traveling frequently for work/medical reasons might not be. Just making a point is all!”
“The point is that mass production of those products as the standard is part of a greater problem of disenfranchisement,” she said. “If white ppl can enjoy the luxury/convenience, there should be an option for everyone to [sic]. Its an ‘insignificant’ example of a bigger problem. That’s all!”
Though currently sporting a straight black bob, Halsey has naturally curly hair. And she was quick to push back at anyone who questioned her identity.
“No. I am not,” she responded to a tweet that accused her of being white.
Halsey told Playboy in a 2015 interview that though she looks white, she is very much a black woman.
“I look like a white girl, but I don’t feel like one. I’m a black woman,” she said. “I’m white-passing. I’ve accepted that about myself and have never tried to control anything about black culture that’s not mine.”
