Billie Eilish sat down with radio station KROQ in Los Angeles to talk about her close and pretty uncommon relationship with fans. Billie feels “on the same level” as and “equal” to the people who like her music, incorporates them and their fan art into her creative process, and tries to do unpaid meet and greets whenever possible.
In trying to describe why she approaches her audience in this more personal way, Billie explained how vivid her own experience was as an obsessed fan of Justin Bieber when she was younger. Billie said that her love of Justin was so intense that it gave her a lot of empathy for what “fans” go through.
I feel like everybody had a Justin Bieber phase when the were like 12 … And so when I say that, it doesn’t sound as serious as it really was.
My mom is in the room and she can literally vouch for it, when I was like 12, I was not a fan of [Justin], I was like … that was like my first love. Like that was the person I was in love with. In my head, he was in love with me. It was like a relationship with a person.”
She then went on to try to explain the long-term emotional impact that a first crush on a singer can have for a “fan.”
It was like a longing. I would cry all the time just because he didn’t know that I existed.”
When asked if Billie would like to meet him now, she was pretty adamant –
Honestly, no … I don’t want to meet him. He’s had enough of ‘me’ kind of people … He is happily married to Hailey Bieber at the moment. By the way, two days ago, I was in San Diego for [a] show and Hannah at my label was like ‘do you know that Hailey Baldwin changed her name to Hailey Bieber?’ And I cried. Immediately.”
