I’m A Celeb’s James McVey reveals secret anorexia battle after developing an ‘unhealthy’ relationship with food as an obese child

He is surviving on a diet mainly made up of rice and beans — unless the A-list camp mates secure dinner for camp during his tough I’m A Celebrity stint.

And ahead of his time in the jungle, James McVey laid bare the harrowing details of his anorexia battle when he reflected on his obsession with food.

The Vamps star, 24, admitted to The Mirror his surprise at how ‘ill’ he looks in throwback photographs unearthed by his fan base.

He told the publication: ‘Fans always send me pictures from years ago and I’m stick thin and I didn’t realise back then just how thin I was.

‘I was ill and I looked ill. I’m happy that now I’ve come full circle and see food as positive. I don’t want to belittle other people who have anorexia but I think it’s definitely had a negative relationship with food in those early days.

The musician confessed his obsession with food goes back to when he was an ‘obese’ child and he used to beg his mum for sweets.

He elaborated to the publication: ‘I’d beg my mum to buy me sweets. I’d shout if she didn’t. I was so annoying she usually gave in. As a result, I became pretty overweight. When I was 12, I got into a health kick to address that.’

James has swapped his usual every day home comforts for the Australian outback on I’m A Celebrity in a jungle crawling with creepy crawlies and snakes.

The star-studded I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here line-up have already reportedly lost four stone after a week on basic rations. 

Harry Redknapp and Nick Knowles were reported to be among the biggest losers out of the camp, according to The Sun.

The source said: ‘We believe between them the campmates have lost around four stone. What the celebs are eating is very healthy, from veg to meat protein and fish and that is absorbed quickly by the body.

‘The weight loss doesn’t do any permanent damage, and most pile it back on within three weeks, especially in the build-up to Christmas. 

‘The celebs see it as a detox, although at the time it’s very difficult as they have nothing to distract from the hunger.’

It is also reported that Medic Bob encourages to campmates to drink at least three litres of water of day, further limiting their food consumption.
