If anyone feels for Meghan Markle ahead of her royal wedding day, it’s John Legend.
After the bride-to-be issued a statement Thursday confirming that her father, Thomas Markle, would not be in attendance for Saturday’s nuptials at Windsor Castle, Legend, 39, replied to a query on Twitter that asked, “Be honest: if you were about to marry into royalty, would your family somehow manage to show their ass and embarrass you?”
The father of two then stated: “I had a cousin try to raffle off tickets to have ‘Christmas Dinner with John Legend’. So, yes.”
In the days leading up to her wedding with Prince Harry, Markle, 36, has been plagued by family drama stemming from staged paparazzi shots said to be orchestrated by half-sister Samantha Markle. The elder Markle, 72, flip-flopped about attending the ceremony, but told TMZ on Tuesday he wouldn’t be attending, opting to undergo heart surgery after suffering a heart attack earlier this month.
On Friday, Kensington Palace announced Prince Charles would walk his future daughter-in-law down the aisle.
“Ms. Meghan Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle,” the palace said in a statement. “The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms. Markle into The Royal Family this way.”
Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, arrived in London earlier this week. She will meet Queen Elizabeth II for tea on Friday.
