Making the shocking revelation at the court for his libel suit against a British newspaper, the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor denies that he encouraged his daughter to use weed and claims that he was just being ‘a responsible parent.’
AceShowbiz -While it’s not surprising that parents want to teach their adolescent kids about drugs, Johnny Depp has a unique way of protecting his daughter from the danger of it. Instead of telling Lily-Rose Depp to stay away from it altogether, the actor supplied his then-13-year-old daughter with pot.
The 57-year-old actor made the shocking revelation at the court in London for a libel suit against a British newspaper. When he was questioned about whether he was being “a responsible parent” by encouraging his daughter to use weed, the Jack Sparrow of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise said, “I never encouraged my daughter to use marijuana.”
“You don’t want your 13-year-old going into some paranoid tailspin,” he defended his decision to provide his teen daughter with drugs. “I was determined not to have her try any drugs out there in the world because it’s too dangerous. I was being a responsible parent.”
Johnny went on detailing what prompted his discussion about drugs with his daughter. “My daughter was 13 years old, and as we all know at 11, 12, and 13 years old, when you go to a high school party, you are approached by people who will want to give you drink because they are drinking at 12 and 13, doing cocaine at 12 and 13 and smoking marijuana at 12 and 13, doing ecstasy and doing many, many drugs,” so he claimed.
The “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” star, who shares Lily-Rose with ex-partner Vanessa Paradis, said that one day his now-21-year-old daughter came to him after she went to a party and “someone passed the joint to her.” He went on recalling, “She was just 12, and she said she didn’t know what to do. I said, ‘Listen, sweetheart, if you are at a party and someone hands you the joint, take the joint from the person, and pass it to the next person. Please don’t experiment with drugs with people you don’t know.’ “
Worrying that the joint could be laced with other things, he advised his daughter, ” ‘Please, please, when you are really at the moment in your life when you are passed the joint and you really want to try it,’ I said, ‘please do me the honor of coming to me when you are ready and you really feel you are ready. I don’t want your first experience to be with people you don’t know, taking things you don’t know, that you don’t trust.’ “
He went on reasoning, “It’s a safety issue, it’s a father worried about his daughter in this kind of situation.” Stressing on the importance of building trust with his kid, he added, “I know the most important thing for a child if you are going to do something like that, I would rather have them be honest with me and me be honest with them, so she doesn’t go out there and do things and hide them from me.”
In an email exchange with Lily-Rose that was also unveiled at the court, Lily-Rose later shared to her father about her first experience with joint. “love it,” she wrote to the actor, who replied to her, “Don’t be loving it too much just yet.”
