Jurgen Klopp was forced to sign Alisson, says Liverpool legend

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness says Jurgen Klopp was forced to move for Alisson because he simply couldn’t afford to persist with Loris Karius.

The Brazil No.1 is all set to become the most expensive goalkeeper in world football in the coming days, with Liverpool close to wrapping up a £66.8m deal for the Roma stopper.

Alisson has agreed personal terms on a long-term deal , and flew into Merseyside on Wednesday night to undergo his medical.

All being well, Liverpool expect to wrap up the deal by the weekend.

And Souness says that Klopp didn’t really have a choice but to go for the 25-year-old because of the worldwide reaction to Karius’s Champions League final nightmare in May, when his two errors – made after suffering a concussion, it was later discovered – paid a huge part in Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory.

Karius has played three times for Liverpool in pre-season, but made an error in the 3-2 victory at Tranmere .

"I think as much as Jurgen would have wanted to be loyal and do right by the goalkeeper, he’s got to go out and get another one," he told Sky Sports News.

"That’s simply because if Karius was to make the same mistake, or a mistake in a big game, it’d be down to the manager not correcting that situation.

"It’s obvious to everyone – look at what happened in the Champions League final. So if Klopp is out to get Alisson or another top goalkeeper, he’s doing the right thing."
