Kate Ferdinand has revealed she feels “embarrassed” when she can’t answer every question about her stepchildren, even though she admitted it’s “impossible”.
The former TOWIE star is stepmum to husband Rio Ferdinand’s children Lorenz, 15, Tate, 13, and Tia, 10, and the couple also share son Cree, who’s 13 months, together.
Speaking about their experience as a blended family, the 30 year old opened up on her struggles in a long post on Instagram, writing: “As a step parent, I often find myself in situations where questions are asked that I just can’t answer.
“It is normally something that happened before I was in the children’s lives. Have they had chicken pox? Did they have all their immunisations as a baby?
Kate continued: “I often put so much pressure on myself about knowing absolutely everything so that I’m not caught out in certain situations but as times goes on I’m beginning to realise this is just not possible and I am no less of a parent for not knowing everything.
“I’m really trying to work on being less hard on myself, but it’s a work in progress as sometimes when I’m caught off guard these things that might seem like tiny details to others just magnify the situation we are in.
“I am a sensitive soul & sometimes that frustrates me but I believe that sensitivity it’s also my strength as it enables me to be the loving, caring person I am, who can see past blood & genetics & truly love without limitations x”.
Rio's first wife and his children's mother Rebecca Ellison sadly passed away in 2015, two years after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Kate and Rio married in 2019 and Kate has since been open about her experience of being a stepparent and launched her own platform called Blended last year, which explores the experiences of blended families.
When she launched the platform on Instagram last year, Kate described it as a network for families meshed together by "a break up, fostering, adopting or loss".
"As you all know we are a blended family, I am a step mum to my 3 beautiful big kids Lorenz, Tate & Tia who unfortunately lost their mum at a very young age, & now a biological mum to our beautiful blessing Cree; the icing on the cake to our extra special family.
"Being a step mum to 3 children who have been through so much & a husband whose wife passed away brings a unique set of challenges. There have been many times I have been left feeling lost, confused and not sure where to turn.
"When I first became a stepparent I felt very isolated & alone, I just didn’t know who to talk to. As my journey continues I’ve realised there is a real need for a place to connect & get advice from people going through similar experiences. I am definitely not a guru, this is as much for me and it is for you guys."
The family also gave an insight into their life after the passing of Rio’s first wife in the 2020 documentary Rio and Kate: Becoming a Step Family.
In a heartbreaking scene, Tia broke down as she places flowers and balloons on her mother's grave – and is comforted by her stepmother Kate.
Rio also lost his mother Janice to cancer, just two years after the death of his wife.
He admitted: “You don't expect to lose someone so important to you so soon after losing someone else. It's not in the script. How do you tell the kids that? Their hearts are broken all over again. They're grieving twice on Mother's Day.”
