Thomas Lemar was on his way to Liverpool at one point.
The Reds made a move for the talented winger in January, after parting company with Philippe Coutinho in a deal worth £142million, but were unable to land the France international before the transfer window slammed shut.
Lemar was also linked with Arsenal around the same time, but put to bed all Premier League speculation by agreeing to sign for Atletico Madrid from Monaco in a deal worth £63.2million on Monday.
The La Liga club, who won the Europa League last season, have also recently tied down Antoine Girezmann and Lucas Hernandez to long-term, big-money deals.
According to a report from Spanish publication AS, the club may need to balance the book as a direct result of this summer’s outlay.
And one man who could be on the move is Jan Oblak.
The Slovakian keeper, who just so happens to be Liverpool’s top transfer target this summer, has a release clause of €100million (£88million).
The Reds might not be prepared to splash that sort of cash on a shot-stopper, but there is the suggestion he might be available for less than this should Atletico need to recoup some money spent signing Lemar.
Liverpool are in desperate need of a new keeper ahead of the new season.
Last year the club rotated between Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius, before the latter became the Anfield giant’s regular number one.
But the German let himself down with two clangers in Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid.
As well as Oblak, Liverpool have also been linked to Jack Butland and Roma’s Alisson.
