Lily James has defended the plentiful intimate moments she shares with her on-screen husband Tommy Lee (played by Sebastian Stan) in the upcoming Pam & Tommy series. The show, which premieres February 2 on the streaming service Disney+, follows the life of Pamela Anderson and her marriage to former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee.
We really felt that the sex scenes had to be a part of the story
The pair were embroiled in a huge media scandal after their sex tape was stolen from their home in 1995 before being plastered all over the internet, subsequently becoming one of the biggest controversies in Hollywood at the time.
And as expected, Lily seemed well aware that taking on the female lead role meant she would be filming some very daring scenes with her co-star Sebastian.
Though some are said to have wondered whether the many sex scenes were necessary to lead the narrative of the programme, Lily has insisted it was “essential”.
In a new interview with The Sun, the award-winning actress explained: “We really felt that the sex scenes had to be a part of the story and had to be essential to the script and progressing their relationship and looking at what happened.
“It was a really great constant conversation and nothing was set in stone.”
Further on, the 32-year-old said that playing Pamela was one of the biggest acting challenges of her life as the role was based on true life events.
Taking on the role of the Baywatch bombshell was no easy feat, yet Lily insisted that channeling her inner Pamela was fun, to say the least.
“She was one of the biggest stars on the planet and an icon,” the Downtown Abbey star continued.
“I got a lot out of this. It was definitely the biggest acting challenge of my life.
“It felt alive and I really loved that.”
Earlier this month, Lily had reiterated the same comments during a chat with Porter magazine as she discussed the transformation it took to pull off her striking resemblance to Pamela.
On top of having watched all of the former Baywatch star’s interviews and documentaries, Lily said she also went ahead and read all of Pamela’s books in hopes of perfecting the role once filming commenced.
And despite having starred in a string of successful projects including 2015’s Cinderella, Baby Driver, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the brunette considered her role on Pam & Tommy as no easy task.
“I’ve never worked so hard,” she told Porter magazine.
“I’ve read all the books [Anderson] has written, I read her poetry, I can parrot along to all her interviews
“And then, of course, there was the physical transformation.
Speaking of the moment she knew he had channelled the character to the best of her abilities, Lily added:
“Slowly, our incredible team found a balance where I resembled Pamela but also felt like I could act through it.”
Lily went on to describe channelling Pamela as “freeing” and “liberating” as she’s never had to disguise her entire appearance for a role before.
It was said to have taken Lily a whopping three hours to get ready to film scenes as Pamela while Sebastian spent two hours in hair and makeup.
