Liverpool assistant manager Zeljko Buvac has reportedly emerged as a serious candidate to replace Arsene Wenger as Arsenal boss – just 24 hours after his Anfield exit.
The Gunners are on the lookout for a new manager, after announcing Wenger will depart this summer following 22 years as Arsenal boss.
A new club hierarchy, including head of football relations Raul Sanllehi, head of recruitment Sven Mislintat and chief executive Ivan Gazidis are leading the search for Wenger’s replacement.
And according to a report in Bosnia, courtesy of Pravda BL – who confirmed Jurgen Klopp’s appointment on Merseyside just before he took up the post in 2015 – Buvac is set to head to the Emirates this summer.
Liverpool No.2 Zeljko Buvac walks away from Anfield just days before Jurgen Klopp’s men face Roma
Buvac has been Klopp’s long-time assistant, working with the Reds chief for 17 years at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.
Liverpool insist he has departed for "personal reasons", although Mirror Sport understands that Buvac tendered his resignation on Sunday, in a move that came as a major shock just days ahead of their clash with Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.
"Zeljko is spending some time away from the first-team environment, between now and the end of the season, for personal reasons," declared Liverpool.
"The club considers the matter to be private and therefore will respect that privacy by not making any further comment. Zeljko remains a Liverpool employee and his position at the club is not affected by this absence."
Buvac us already familiar with Mislintat, the pair having worked together at Borussia Dortmund.
And that, plus the report in his homeland and a succession of bets have seen Buvac emerge as third favourite in the running to be next Arsenal manager, falling from 33/1 to 6/1.
