Manchester United came unstuck at Brighton after Pascal Gross’ header was awarded thanks to goal line technology despite Marcos Rojo’s heroics on the line.
The Red Devils were abject throughout with sloppy passing on the south coast and Jose Mourinho was irate when Marcus Rashford blew a glorious chance.
The England forward failed to cut the ball back for an unmarked Anthony Martial inside the penalty area, instead opting to take it by himself from a tight angle.
United were punished when Gross leaped high above Ashley Young to drive a header past the superb David De Gea and television images showed the ball crept over the line by a matter of inches.
Here is Adrian Kajumba with player ratings from the AMEX Stadium:
De Gea 8
Had to show player-of-the-year form to deny Murray, Izquierdo and Gross.
Poor effort to stop cross for goal won’t enhance his chances of staying.
There when needed to get something in the way and frustrate Brighton.
First start since February and passing rusty. Some crucial interventions though.
Unlikely to have impressed Mourinho with challenge to stop Gross winning header for goal.
Reliable as ever as an extra layer of protection in front of defence.
Failed to threaten and really influence game after early goal ruled out.
Little went right in frustrating first half and didn’t improve much in second.
Picked to unlock defence but unable to open up Brighton on quiet night.
A big chance through the middle in Lukaku’s absence but he didn’t take it.
In for Sanchez but too often complicated things by venturing into middle.
Spot on with kicking, catching and decision making whenever called on.
Tigerish display from right-back. Helped by Martial drifting from his territory.
His main priority was keeping Rashford in check but almost scored too.
Got away with one slip but bravery impressive to head away Rashford’s thunderbolt.
Was back in more welcome surroundings after boos at Burnley and solid.
Up for this glamour game and big threat. Tried too much at times.
Went close with daisy cutter. Didn’t stop snapping at United heels all game.
Neat and tidy in midfield. Helped keep things ticking over.
Had the beating of Darmian and crucially did it to set up Gross’s goal.
Hard to pick up and ghosted into box to score with determined header.
Murray BOOKED 6
Almost scored spectacular volley. Made his mark with crunching foul on Fellaini.
