Manchester United fans have slammed a ‘scandalous’ poll which voted Cristiano Ronaldo as the club’s greatest ever Premier League player.
The Red Devils, along with fellow ever-presents Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Everton, played their 1,000th Premier League game on the final day of the season.
And the club marked the milestone by asking supporters to vote for their best goal, game, save and player of that period.
Wayne Rooney’s Manchester derby overhead kick won the goal award, while the 4-3 win over City in 2009 was voted as the best game.
David De Gea’s spectacular stop to deny now teammate Juan Mata’s free-kick at Stamford Bridge was selected as the best save.
But it was the player category which courted most controversy.
Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs were voted third and second best players respectively, with Ronaldo pipping them both to top spot.
And some fans were less than happy with the outcome.
Ronaldo scored 118 times in 292 appearances for United, including 42 strikes in 49 outings in 2007-08.
He won three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups and one Champions League during his time at Old Trafford.
By comparison, Giggs and Scholes both played the entirety of their careers with the Red Devils.
Giggs featured 963 times in all competitions, scoring 168 goals and collecting 22 major honours.
