Meghan Markle Calls 2020 Election the “Most Important of Our Lifetime” During TIME100 TV Appearance

Meghan Markle wants to see Americans utilize their right to vote.

The Duchess of Sussex appeared alongside her husband, Prince Harry, during Tuesday night’s TIME100 television special, which highlighted the magazine’s most influential people—those who have defined 2020 thus far.

For the Sussexes’ quick stint on-screen, they both spoke about the need to disband hate speech and misinformation online, as well as the importance of Americans making their way to the polls and voting in the upcoming presidential election. The appearance marked the first time the couple had appeared on television since stepping away from royal duties early this year.

“We’re six weeks out from the election, and today is Voter Registration Day,” said Meghan during the pair’s prerecorded clip. “Every four years, we’re told, ‘This is the most important election of our lifetime.’ But this one is. When we vote, our values are put into action, and our voices are heard.”

Harry echoed his wife’s statements, declaring that even though he cannot vote in the election, the fight against hate speech and misinformation online is especially apparent during an election year.

“As we approach this November, it’s vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity. What we consume, what we are exposed to, and what we engage with online, has a real effect on all of us,” said the duke.

In her remarks, Meghan also acknowledged frontline workers battling the coronavirus pandemic and activists protesting racial injustice. In recent months, both her and Harry have met with Black resistance groups and donated to COVID-19-related causes amid the highly tumultuous year in America.

“Honor those who gave us courage this year. Like the scientists, researchers, and medical professionals who are leading the fight against COVID-19. Or the countless voices who are speaking out with passion and purpose against injustice and inequality and to those silently marching in solidarity, in peaceful protest to stand for what is just and what is right,” concluded the duchess.

Meghan’s TIME100 appearance wasn’t the only time the duchess had spoken about the critical importance of voting this year. Meghan previously teamed up with feminist trailblazer Gloria Steinem to talk about why women need to vote now more than ever, and she also delivered a keynote address for the When All Women Vote virtual Couch Party.
