She may usually be sporting a million dollar smile, but, like most of us, Michelle Obama had little to smile about when Donald Trump was sworn into office in January 2017.
In her new book Becoming, the former First Lady got candid on how Trump’s winning the presidency affected her. Unsurprisingly, the political upset gave her all the symptoms of clinical depression.
Obama wrote that she just wanted “to block it all out and go to sleep” once it was clear that Trump would win the election in November 2016, as she was particularly aghast over the millions of women who voted for a “misogynist” over an “exceptionally qualified female candidate.” She wrote:
“I will always wonder about what led so many women, in particular, to reject an exceptionally qualified female candidate and instead choose a misogynist as their president.”
Obama’s disposition only grew clouder in the following months when said “misogynist” was sworn into office.
Noting how Trump’s inauguration lacked the “vibrant diversity” of her husbands’, Obama felt no reason to be happy — so she didn’t even pretend to put on her signature smile. She continued:
“The vibrant diversity of the two previous inaugurations was gone … Someone from Barack’s administration might have said that the optics there were bad — that what the public saw didn’t reflect the president’s reality or ideals… But in this case, maybe it did. Realizing it, I made my own optic adjustment: I stopped even trying to smile.”
Thankfully, Melania Trump’s fake smile made up for the frowns of the Obamas, their administration, and the millions of Americans cringe-watching at home:
Becoming hits shelves Tuesday.
