Miley Cyrus Just Took Back Her Apology for Posing Nearly Topless 10 Years Ago

In 2008, a then-15-year-old Miley Cyrus caused a stir when she posed for Vanity Fair seemingly topless, with her back exposed while she covered up in a white sheet. The portrait, taken by Annie Leibovitz, put the Disney Channel star at the center of controversy. The kids’ TV network released a statement explaining the photoshoot and Cyrus issued an apology, saying she was “embarrassed” about the photos. But now, 10 years later, she actually DGAF.

The singer and actress, now 25, went down memory lane last night as she shared some throwback shots on Twitter. After posting some cute headshots from her childhood, Cyrus ended the streak with a New York Post cover about her provocative Vanity Fair photo, titled “MILEY’S SHAME.”

Miley rescinded her apology from a decade ago with five simple words: “IM NOT SORRY,” she wrote, “Fuck YOU.”

Her fans cheered her on in the comments.

In April 2008, the week after the Annie Leibovitz photos broke, Cyrus apologized in a statement to People: “My goal in my music and my acting is always to make people happy. For Vanity Fair, I was so honored and thrilled to work with Annie [Leibovitz]. I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed.”

A source explained to People that Miley’s parents were on set with her the whole day, but left before the provocative photo was taken. Only her grandmother and teacher were left with her at the time.

“Annie convinced them it was going to be artistic. Her parents are mortified. They know this is a learning moment for Miley,” the insider told the weekly. “The photo suggests that she is [naked], but she is not. She is covered by a sheet, and beneath the sheet she is clothed. Originally, she was in a flesh-colored tank top but was asked to remove it.”

Cyrus wasn’t far from controversy in the late 2000s-early 2010s following her Vanity Fair shoot. Eyebrows were also raised when she pole danced at the Teen Choice Awards, appeared to smoke salvia in a video and later twerked on Robin Thicke at the VMAs.
