Naya Rivera’s son Josey ‘needs a mother figure’ after the Glee star’s death, an insider has stated.
The actress – who starred as Santana Lopez on the musical show – tragically died in July, after she went missing on a boating trip with her five-year-old son.
Following the devastating news, ex-husband Ryan Dorsey, 37, defended Naya’s sister Nickayla, as she moved in with him, in a bid to help look after the little one.
While this raised eyebrows from some fans, a source close to the situation explained she had offered ‘relief and comfort’ at a tough time for the family.
‘Ryan is a great dad, but Josey needs a mother figure in his life too,’ they told People.
‘Nickayla loves [Josey] so much and is amazing with him. Ryan knows that Josey will thrive with her around.’
‘Ryan has days when he very much struggles,’ they added, explaining: ‘It helps him that he’s not alone with Josey. He’s very grateful for her.’
Naya tragically died earlier this year when she went missing during a boat trip with Josey, in Lake Piru, California.
After a lengthy search operation, the 33-year-old was pronounced dead, with heartbroken tributes pouring in from around the world.
Nickayla recently moved in with her former brother-in-law, with Ryan stating that Josey had asked for this to happen.

Sister, There are no words to describe my love for you. Side by side or miles apart, our connection is infinite. Our bond is unbreakable. We were complete opposites, yet simultaneously the same. The yin to my yang. I never knew that by losing you, I would find so much of you in myself. I’ve never known a life without you in it & still can’t imagine it. My world is turned upside down. But through it all, everything we were, we are still. I’ll always look at you with the same eyes as I did when I was young. My shmaya, I’ll love you for eternity & miss you every second of my life. 🤍
Taking to his Instagram page, the Ray Donovan star hit out at trolls in a lengthy video, addressing the situation.
‘I probably lost a little over 20 pounds. I don’t get good sleep, I’m sad every day when I wake up, I go to sleep sad, every night I’m staring at the ceiling or staring at the wall and I think to myself how lucky I am to still have my mum and have her help out in my life still,’ he began.
‘And then I think how [Josey] won’t have that same opportunity in his future. It makes me beyond sad.’
‘He witnessed a nightmare before his eyes and he knows that even if they find her, she’s not coming home.’
Calling the living arrangements a ‘temporary situation’, Ryan continued: ‘After all [Josey has] had to go through, how could you deny him that? Because of what some strangers might think or say or spew some hatred based on some ill-advised, illogical, misinformed tabloid? It’s sad.
‘I hope you would be as lucky as me to have family on both sides who support and have helped out tremendously and to have a young woman who is his blood, his Titi, who’s willing to put her life on hold and sacrifice things, uproot her situation for the betterment of your child, so when you put your child to bed, you don’t have to always be alone with your thoughts. You don’t have to be sad every day and night, wondering when does it get better.
‘At least you have someone there with you who you can talk to or just sit in silence and be sad with. You don’t have to deal with it completely alone.’
Ryan also dismissed claims he was in a relationship with Nickayla, adding: ‘I wish I was worried about a relationship right now, not thinking about this and living with this everyday.’
