For Nicki Minaj, coming in at No. 2 on the Billboard charts feels like, well, No. 2.
The rapper went on a Twitter tirade this weekend when her album, “Queen,” clocked in behind Travis Scott‘s “Astroworld,” which she partly blamed on free promo he received from his baby mama Kylie Jenner.
“Travis sold over 50K of these. With no requirement of redeeming the album! With no dates for a tour, etc,” Minaj, 35, captioned a screenshot of Jenner’s Instagram promoting Scott’s album. “I spoke to him. He knows he doesn’t have the #1 album this week. I love my fans for the #1 album in AMERICA! I’ll explain on #QueenRadio 4 albums in, #1 in 86 countries.”
“My first album sold 400K. No one is doing that with debut albums now. So I’m so grateful. I lost out on 12 hours of sales and did 200K in one week after I was supposedly cancelled,” she added. “I bit my tongue last #QueenRadio but I won’t On Tuesday. I love you guys so much.”
Minaj particularly took issue with Scott’s sales of bundles, which included clothing and “season pass” tickets with the album.
“I looked at the numbers the Carters, Kanye, Nas, etc recently did. Travis sold 200K in his first week of clothes alone. I spoke to him last night & he said he’s been selling clothes b4 the music,” she griped. “Billboard says they’ll change the rules cuz of this, so it should be changed now!”
The “Chun-Li” rapper didn’t lash out solely about 26-year-old Scott. She also took aim at Spotify and Apple Music over the tactics used to promote Drake‘s “Scorpion.”
Minaj previously took aim at the media, specifically Pitchfork, for criticizing her “Fefe” collaboration and upcoming tour with Tekashi 6ix9ine, who pleaded guilty to one felony count of use of a child in a sexual performance. She made mention that Lady Gaga was praised for her collaboration with R. Kelly, “Do What U Want,” in 2015.
She also alleged that writers were being paid to write negative articles about her and “Queen.”
“When I was told they were being paid to write these things I didn’t believe it, now I know it’s true,” she alleged. “I got the proof on that too. Loving my life. They so bothered by this lil south side Jamaica QUEEN.”
The Queens native continued, “I’m supposed to keep letting these ppl get money to bully me behind the scenes & not say anything. Yikes … This is what happens when you release a great body of work after they spent millions to ruin you. Lol. 4 albums later still breaking records. #1 in 86 countries after they said it was a wrap. Praise God. He’s about to expose them. They writing about 69 cuz #Queen is flawless.”
For what it’s worth, “Queen” moved 185,000 equivalent units (78,000 of which were pure sales) including her own bundle packages, in its first week, while Scott’s “Astroworld” moved 205,000 equivalent albums in its second week, Billboard reported.
Here’s hoping Minaj is able to move past this quickly: TMZ reports that Scott and Jenner, 21, are slated to sit right behind her at Monday’s MTV Video Music Awards.
