Pat Nixon didn’t know how to decorate the White House

Nonagenarian fashion plate Iris Apfel says that Richard Nixon’s wife, Pat, had “J.C. Penney taste.”

Apfel, who along with her husband restored furnishings and picked fabrics for nine presidents in the White House, from Harry Truman to Bill Clinton, explained, “Pat knew very little about restoration, [but] she was passionately interested. Poor thing, we used to let her play,” Apfel said at a 92Y talk this week.

“She really didn’t know anything at all, because I think originally she was sort of a J.C. Penney customer. She would pick fabrics, always everything wrong.”

Apfel added Pat would call and say, “As usual, I picked everything wrong.”
