Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan, 55, who hosts his self-titled show Life Stories, has opened up about how he and actor Vinnie Jones, 55, have gone through many ups and downs since first meeting. While the ITV broadcaster says they are now “great friends”, he discussed the time the X Men star nearly “throttled” him.

Nearly throttled me.

In a new interview, Piers, who has known Vinnie for 30 years, was asked about the time they first met.

After describing him as one of the most “charismatic” people he has ever met, the presenter discussed the time he was Vinnie’s boss when he was a columnist.

Piers began: “Over the years I’ve employed Vinnie as a columnist, then had to fire him – he talks about that in his previous autobiography at great length – and I’ve been in a nightclub when someone has come up behind me and nearly throttled me to death and I’ve suddenly realised it was Vinnie.”

Despite this, the GMB star revealed how they have become closer over the past few years.

“So it’s fair to say we’ve had our ups and downs, but in the last few years I’ve got to know Vinnie really well by playing golf with him in LA where we both play at the same course regularly together and we’ve become great friends,” he added.

Piers said he first met the star when he was a local reporter for the Wimbledon News, before becoming a Showbiz Reporter for The Sun.

The journalist described him as a “bundle of energy” who works and socialises “incredibly hard”.

Piers went on to address Vinnie’s beloved wife Tanya, who passed away last year aged 53 after a six-year battle with cancer.

The host shared: “He is a remarkable character, but it will be a very different Vinnie who I interview ten years on from our first Life Stories encounter.

“He has now been tee-total for seven years, and his beloved wife has so sadly died, he has a very different life now.”

After Vinnie and Tanya married in 1994 in Watford, the couple headed to Los Angeles so Vinnie could pursue his career in acting.

The star has starred in the likes of X-Men: The Last Stand, Mean Machine, and Swordfish.

Elsewhere, Piers recently took to Twitter to hit out at Loose Women star Denise Welch after she tried to shine a light on the impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the country’s mental health in an interview on This Morning.

The former Coronation Street actress urged the government and the media to stop “scaremongering” citizens, and instead, provide information about how things have improved.

On Friday, she said: “As a mental health person, if people want to say, ‘She’s on about that again,’ I don’t care because of the people it does help – I will do anything to help balance the fear-mongering. The other day, it said, ‘Universities could become the care homes of the second wave,’ how dare they?”

Piers responded after her appearance and wrote in view of his 7.6 million followers: “Dumb, deluded & dangerous Covid-deniers like Denise Welch need to stop being given airtime.

“Her idiotic, ill-informed ramblings – from a woman who never stops telling us that she suffers from mental illness – will cost lives by persuading people to think the virus isn’t a threat.”

Since Denise asked Piers to show some evidence to back up his accusations, she has now spoken out to defend her ITV co-star Ruth Langsford and her husband Eamonn Holmes, after a Twitter user voiced their opinions about the couple online.

“I’m disappointed in Ruth and Eamon. You could see how uncomfortable they were at her [Denise] speaking out. And proves they are not allowed to go against the government. What chance do we all really have here against the media and government. God, I feel so let down with it, so fed up.”

Denise then responded: “Honestly. Ruth and Eamonn weren’t upset at me speaking out,” Denise told the disappointed user. But their job is to balance things.”

Piers Morgan’s Life Stories airs tonight at 10pm on ITV.
