Piers Morgan took a playful swipe at his former breakfast TV rival Dan Walker on Twitter today. The former Good Morning Britain host joked that he would step-in to replace the BBC Breakfast presenter’s co-star Louise Minchin, who has quit the show.

“Stop blubbing Dan – I start Monday,” Piers tweeted, in view of his 7.9 million followers.

“BBC wanted the guy who beat you in the ratings, and the first same-sex male breakfast presenting team to appease the wokies,” the outspoken TV star quipped.

The 56-year-old made his comments while sharing an emotional post from Dan, who likened Louise’s departure to a “break-up”.

The BBC star, 44, paid tribute to his long-standing colleague and shared a selection of pictures of the pair at work.

Many took to the comments section of Piers’ post to share their thoughts on the matter.

“Wow I Definitely watch you two in the mornings,”(sic) one follower remarked.

“I hope this is true!! If you’re just winding Dan up I’ll be gutted!” another added, clearly looking forward to seeing the presenter return to TV.

“Thought the BBC couldn’t afford you….,” a third person chimed in.

“No thanks…,” Dan hit back, sharing the post on his own account.

“Wouldn’t want you storming off if Carol [Kirkwood] asked you something awkward #TearsForPiers,” he added.

Alongside the social media snaps that Dan shared online earlier in the day, he wrote of Louise’s exit: “This feels like a break-up,” followed by a crying emoji.

“What am I going to do without Louise?”

“Thank you for all the lovely messages after an emotional morning on #BBCBreakfast – I’m sure Louise will get to read them all later,” he told his 712,000 followers.

“My life will be poorer without her on the sofa. She’s the best,” the father-of-three gushed.

Louise said she would miss her co-host when she took to the comments section of the photos.

“I am going to miss you @mrdanwalker you have always had my back, including today, and it has been an absolute pleasure to be sitting on that red sofa with you.

“Thank you x,” she continued.

Louise announced her departure from BBC Breakfast on the show this morning after two decades as host.

“I have decided it is time I stopped setting my alarm for 0340 in the morning and I’m going to be leaving the programme,” she told viewers.

The 52-year-old said she had “loved being part of it [the breakfast show]” but was looking forward to having a lie-in.

She thanked everyone who had watched her over the years and said she would be leaving the programme later this year.
