Octavia Spencer plays an educator in IFC Films’ “A Kid Like Jake” about a 4-year-old’s gender identity.
“I loved the message of the film — it depends on where you are at in your life — but it is about embracing differences,” Spencer told us at a premiere.
“There is a huge community that will benefit from projects like this — and I need to lend my name and learn from it.”
As for her own childhood: “My mother was not the type to make us fit into a box, and I am grateful for that because I see the world differently … We played with everything. We played with sticks … we could not afford dolls. By the end of the year, you cut off all their hair, and they look like little boys anyway.”
