The British royal family came together for a very important event on Monday: Prince Louis’s christening. The christening of the third child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took place at the Chapel Royal in the grounds of St. James’s Palace, the same place his older brother Prince George was christened in 2013. At the ceremony, Louis Arthur Charles was baptized into the Church of England, by The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, who recently presided over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. The Christian religion has been intrinsically linked to the royal family since it was created by King Henry VIII in 1534. Louis’s great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who was not in attendance, is the Supreme Governor of the church.
The prince’s 6 godparents were revealed shortly before the ceremony, and included a number of close family friends, as well as Kate’s cousin Lucy. Harry and Meghan were among those present for the historic moment, though they were not chosen to be godparents, as William and Kate have always preferred to choose from a close group of friends, cousins, and aides, rather than immediate family. The only member of the royal family to be a godparent to one of their children is Zara Tindall, who is Prince George’s godmother. Zara, who recently gave birth to another royal baby, her second daughter Lena Elizabeth Tindall, was not present at Louis’s christening, which was a very private event with only the godparents and a handful of close family in attendance.
These other guests included Prince Charles and Camilla, Kate’s parents Michael and Carole Middleton, her brother James, and her sister Pippa and her husband James Matthews. Louis’s older siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte were also in attendance, looking as adorable as ever. Keep reading to see all the photos from this important royal day.
