Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s big day is here, and it involves one of the most memorable fashion moments we’ve seen at a wedding in a long time.
Markle’s wedding dress—designed especially for her by Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy—has finally been unveiled to the world, and it sure sends a statement. The gorgeous dress featured an open-neck design with a mid-sleeve and flowing train. Her veil was adorned with lace detailing, and she styled the look with a nod to the royal family by wearing Queen Mary’s diamond tiara.
Rumors swirled for weeks leading up to the moment about who exactly would be chosen to design such an important look. One of Princess Diana’s wedding dress designers David Emmanuel clarified ahead of time that Markle couldn’t be a “sex bomb” on her wedding day, though she still looks spectacular regardless.
“What would I put Meghan in? Something sleek and clean, quite bodied with a long train, and I’d put her in a clinging silk crepe,” he said. “But, you know, she can’t be the sex bomb on her wedding day. She can look smoldering and wonderful, but it’s got to be regal.”
Years before she walked down the aisle, she talked to Glamour about her wedding dress preferences.
“I have the luxury of wearing beautiful pieces of clothing every day for work, so my personal style—wedding or not—is very pared down and relaxed. Classic and simple is the name of the game, perhaps with a modern twist. I personally prefer wedding dresses that are whimsical or subtly romantic,” she said.
“Delphine Manivet and Christos Costarellos are faves of mine for their uniqueness and beauty. And I will always be a fan of Ellie Saab. J. Mendel is spectacular as well, especially for more structural designs.”
