The daughter of Paul McCartney says in interview that criticism ‘has never faced me,’ adding, ‘Being questioned is good for me.’
Stella McCartney‘s own employees have at times questioned whether she can succeed. The British designer launched her own label in partnership with fashion conglomerate Kering in 2001, though recently made a deal with the organisation in which she acquired total control of her brand.
She has received numerous awards and honors throughout the course of her career, including being made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to fashion. However, in spite of her legacy, those under her reign have still expressed their doubts at times.
“There have definitely been moments when I’ve been ridiculed or not taken seriously,” she shared in an interview with MailOnline. “I’ve even had people on my payroll who have doubted whether or not I can succeed. That does make you think: ‘Hang on a moment, I’m employing you, yet you don’t believe in the longevity of my business?’ ”
McCartney, the daughter of musician Paul McCartney, famously faced criticism from Karl Lagerfeld when she was signed up to replace him as Chloe’s creative director in 1997, with the fashion mogul stating, “Chloe should have taken a big name. They did, but in music, not fashion. Let’s hope she’s as gifted as her father.”
However, the French label went on to enjoy considerable critical and commercial success under her leadership, and the 46-year-old now takes encouragement from any negative comments. “Criticism has never fazed me. Being questioned is good for me – it inspired me to prove people wrong,” she smiled.
The lifelong vegetarian is known for her focus on sustainable and vegan-friendly fabrics in her designs, and on Friday, April 27 was honored at the very first PETA Vegan Fitness Awards. McCartney won the Best Vegan Gym Bag for her eco-friendly Adidas by Stella McCartney Gym Bag Multi, a shopper/rucksack hybrid made of 100 per cent nylon.
