Matt Smith sensationally claimed Claire Foy should have been paid more than him for The Crown when he branded Netflix’s salary disparity as a ‘great mistake’.
Shockwaves erupted when it emerged the actor, who played Prince Philip, was paid significantly more than the actress who played the titular role Queen Elizabeth II.
The Doctor Who star hit out at Netflix bosses for the ‘grave oversight’ as he insisted the actress was the ‘lead in the show’ and she worked ‘the hardest’.

Matt explained on the Larry King Now show: ‘Claire was the lead in the show, she worked the hardest, she should have been paid the most. It was a great mistake.’

He elaborated: ‘It’s dumb! It’s dumb! She did the most work, she worked the hardest, honestly every single day.
‘It was representative of the amount of work and how she worked. All you can do is learn from your mistakes and move on!’

Although it is not known how much Matt made on the show, Claire earned $40,000 per episode throughout her run on The Crown.
Bosses claimed Matt was only paid more for the first seasons as he was a bigger name than Claire at the time of casting.
Lily James’ boyfriend explained all he wanted to do was ‘amend’ the ‘grave oversight’ the moment he heard about the pay disparity.
The hunk did credit Netflix for responding ‘diligently’ to amend their ‘huge mistake’ which left Claire feeling red-faced.
He elaborated: ‘Well I didn’t know about it to be honest with you. And I thought it was a mistake a huge mistake. It was a grave oversight and when we heard about it together we sort of said about trying to amend it really and I have to say that I think Netflix did respond very diligently.
‘I think in that particularly situation it changed quickly I think what it alludes to it’s not just our industry that needs to change it needs to change across all industries whether that be nursing or teaching and it speaks to a much wider problem.
‘One we need to address as a society that we need to improve.’
Claire and Matt were both nominated for Emmy awards for their performances. Left Bank stated that male and female stars will get the same pay.
Producers of the show pledged earlier this year that there will be no gender pay parity for the new cast in season three.
The Crown stars, including leads Claire and Matt, will hand over the baton to a whole new galaxy of Hollywood’s elite.
