VAR could be brought in for the latter stages of this season’s Champions League.
The World Cup in Russia welcomed the introduction of video assistant referees with general success.
And the Times reports UEFA are working on a plan for the system to come into play from the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
There had been concerns over using VAR in Europe’s premier competition due to the manpower required for eight group matches on the same night
But UEFA believe by introducing it for the Champions League latter stages, they can ensure the system is monitored and controlled as efficiently as possible.
A decision is likely to be made by the end of the month at a meeting of UEFA’s executive committee.
UEFA are also likely to consider using VAR at Euro 2020, but will wait before making a decision.
The Champions League group stage draw will take place on August 30 in Monaco.
