Bolton fans had to be restrained by stewards as they attempted to get at beleaguered boss Phil Parkinson.
The Trotters are in deep trouble at the bottom of the Championship and faced a must-win clash with relegation rivals Burton Albion.
But after first-half goals from Hope Akpan and Lucas Akins, there were ugly scenes in the away end.
A section of the Bolton support made their way down to the front of the stand to approach boss Parkinson.
They had to be restrained by stewards while scuffles also broke out in the away section as the first-half came to a close.
One supporter was seen being escorted out of the Pirelli Stadium by stewards with more believed to have followed.
Bolton can still avoid relegation on the final day by beating Nottingham Forest.
