Zinedine Zidane is waiting for the call from Manchester United to take over from Jose Mourinho.
Zidane is very interested in succeeding Mourinho at United and is following the turmoil at Old Trafford.
United’s hierarchy are standing by Mourinho for now and believe he can still turn around the club’s fortunes on the pitch.
But Mirror Sport understands French legend Zidane is ready to step in if United feel they need to make a change.
Zidane, 46, has an impressive CV and in his two-and-a-half year spell in charge of Real Madrid he won three successive Champions Leagues and one La Liga.
The 1998 World Cup winner feels he could improve United’s under-performing squad and bring some much-needed stability to the club after Mourinho’s public strops.
Zidane quit Real in the wake of May’s Champions League Final win over Liverpool because of disagreements with the club’s board.
He feels he could work with United and is impressed by the backing the Glazers and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward have given Mourinho and his predecessor Louis van Gaal.
Mourinho is desperately trying to shore up his vulnerable position at United and made a great show of acknowledging the fans after Monday’s stinging home defeat to Tottenham to try and retain their support.
He has also stopped criticising players in public in an attempt to keep them onside.
However some have not forgotten how he called them out and are confused by his tactics and team selections.
