10 Celebs Who Have Secret Social Media Accounts (And 10 Who Quit)

Most of us can’t imagine our lives without social media – in fact, most of us are on all – or almost all – of the main social media platforms out there, such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Snapchat. And there is nothing wrong with that – social media helps us keep tabs on other people as well as share our own life with our friends and admirers.

Most celebrities are no exception. They too want to stay in the loop and they want to share their everyday life with their fans. Indeed, it is thanks to social media that we get to see what our favorite celebrities ate, where they went on holidays to and what their kids and partners are up to. Social media allows us to feel closer to our favorite A-listers.

However, while many celebrities were quick to jump on the social media bandwagon, others are categorically against it, insisting that their private lives should remain just that – private. Still, some of these “private” celebrities have created fake or secret social media accounts just so that they can catch up with their friends and family or see the newest trends.

Other celebrities, on the other hand, have tried out social media and decided to quit it, whether temporarily or for good.

20 Beyonce’s Secret Snapchat For Talking To Her Mum

No one knew that Beyonce had a secret Snapchat account until her mother spilled the beans, albeit kind of accidentally. Last year – in 2017 – the talented singer’s mother Tina Lawson shared a face swap video of Beyonce on her Instagram account.

Beyonce’s mother captioned the video as – “My Baby ❤️Beyonce sent me this. It’s really cool! I have to learn to do this? her face and my face together. Her voice coming out of my mouth. Or maybe it’s her mouth! Hell, I don’t know?Really weird? No Snapchat!! Seriously !! “It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under? Don’t push me! cause I’m close to the edge I’m trying not to lose my head! The Message by Grand Master Flash.”

In addition, in February 2017 Beyonce shared a picture of herself and Blue Ivy on Instagram. While that is not unusual, the filter she used was – it was Snapchat’s deer filter, thus further confirming Beyonce’s fans’ suspicions that she had a private Snapchat account.

Shortly after it became apparent that Beyonce had a secret Snapchat, her fans took to social media, begging the talented singer to share her the name of her Snapchat account with them. For example, one fan said, according to Elle – “PLEASE BLESS THE WORLD WITH YOUR SNAPCHAT NAME” while another said, “I need that snapchat!”

19 Keira Knightley Joined Twitter For 12 Hours Only

The actress Keira Knightley is known for her privacy – she has neither Facebook nor Instagram accounts and while she did once sign up for Twitter she confessed that she quit it after only 12 hours.

However, it is worth noting that Knightley didn’t even use her own name for her Twitter account – she signed up on the app using a fake name but felt like she was back in the “playground” according to Independent

“It made me feel a little bit like being in a school playground and not being popular and standing on the sidelines kind of going, ‘Argh’.”

Knightley admitted that she has no idea how other famous people do it and has said, according to Independent, that she is not at all interested in other people’s lives –

“I like being private. I haven’t asked a lot of the actresses who I really admire, ‘How do you do it?’ because I don’t want to know. Maybe I’m childish in that way; I just don’t want to know about your life.”

Of course, if you do try and look Keira Knightley up on the internet you are bound to come across quite a few social media accounts. None of them are verified however and all are run by fans, even if they say otherwise.

18 Prince Harry – Or Spike Wells – Had A Secret Facebook And A Secret Instagram

Being a member of the royal family is all fun and games until you have to use a fake username for all your social media accounts. Take Prince Harry for example. Apparently, he is an avid user of social media. Or rather, was an avid user of social media up until 2012 when he had to take all of his accounts down. But how did he avoid having his social media accounts swamped by fans? By using a fake name, of course!

In 2012, The Telegraph reported that a Facebook profile owned by a man named “Spike Wells” from Maun in Botswana actually belongs to none other than Prince Harry. It makes sense for apparently, Prince Harry’s nickname is “Spike” and Maun was one of the places where he and his ex-girlfriend Chelsy Davy (seen in the image above) once went on holidays.

The Facebook profile in question had over 400 friends, many of whom were rich and famous. However, it was deleted in 2012 after pictures of the Prince partying in Las Vegas were published for everyone to see.

In addition, according to The Sun, Prince Harry also had a secret Instagram account which he used for following the Instagram of his fiancee Meghan Markle before she took her Instagram down. Prince Harry also apparently used the secret Instagram account to follow some of his friends as well as a few charities.

17 Daisy Ridley Quit Instagram After Fans were rude to her

Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley decided to quit Instagram in 2016 after she received backlash for her post on victims of gun violence. In her post, she mentioned her attendance at Teen Choice Awards during which Jessica Alba had relatives of shooting victims come up to the stage. Ridley’s post said, according to The Guardian

“As I sat in the audience yesterday, tears were streaming down my face at the tribute to those that have been lost to gun violence. I didn’t get a great picture of the incredible group that came onstage but they were so brave. It was a true moment of togetherness. We must ‪#‎stoptheviolence.”

Some of Ridley’s fans applauded her for the post whereas others called her a hypocrite seeing how she is part of a rather violent franchise herself. Apparently, the mean comments were too much for Ridley to handle, as she later said, according to Daily Mail – “I’m just not equipped for [Instagram]. I’m super sensitive – not too sensitive – but I really feel things.”

And even though Ridley has since returned to her Instagram account she might very well delete all of her social media accounts eventually. Well, by all accounts we mean Instagram and Facebook, for she never did join Twitter.

Indeed, Ridley believes that social media is incredibly unhealthy for one’s mental health, especially when it comes to teenagers. According to The Guardian, Ridley said – “It’s such a weird thing for young people to look at distorted images of things they should be.”

16 Adele’s Secret Twitter Account For Tweets

There’s no denying that Twitter is great for expressing one’s opinions, regardless of how controversial they may be. And it’s no secret that celebrities love Twitter, perhaps even too much. Indeed, some of the tweets that A-listers post often land them in trouble.

Take the talented singer Adele, for example. Adele recently confessed at a show in Brisbane in Australia that her PR team no longer allow her to post on her public Twitter page which has almost 30 million followers.

According to NY Daily News, the talented singer said that her drunken tweets had gotten her into trouble – “I’m not allowed access to my own Twitter because I’m quite mouthy and I say the wrong thing a lot of the time. So they took that privilege away from me.”

Still, Adele couldn’t bear the thought of giving up Twitter and thus ended up creating a private Twitter account – “I was looking on Twitter last night. They don’t know I have a secret account. Well, obviously they do now because I said that. By ‘they’ I mean my management.”

Much to the disappointment of the singer’s fans, Adele did not reveal her secret Twitter handle, leaving her fans to wonder which one of the million twitter accounts out there might belong to her.

15 John Mayer Quit Twitter Because It Negatively Impacted His Creativity

The singer and songwriter John Mayer quit Twitter in 2010 due to the belief that it was impacting his creativity.

In fact, Mayer even confessed that he had become a “tweetaholic” according to the Rolling Stone magazine –

“I realized about a year ago that I couldn’t have a complete thought anymore, and I was a tweetaholic. I had four million Twitter followers, and I was always writing on it. And I stopped using Twitter as an outlet and I started using Twitter as the instrument to riff on, and it started to make my mind smaller and smaller and smaller. And I couldn’t write a song.”

Apparently, quitting twitter helped Mayer get his creativity back as well as become more focused and disciplined when it came to music making. In the same interview with the Rolling Stone magazine, Mayer shared the rules for making music – “Here are the rules for recording this record: No drum machines, no loops, no keyboards to start out with, no excuses, no breaks, no laptops, no nothing. If you take a break, it’s to eat. If you’re done, you go home.”

Mayer returned to Twitter in 2014 and has been posting pretty regularly ever since, although it is not unusual for him to take a break from the social media platform once in a while in order to get his creative juices flowing.

14 Durant’s Secret Twitter For Arguing With Trolls

It is tough dealing with internet trolls but most celebrities manage to do so without creating fake allies or fake social media accounts. Not the basketball player Kevin Durant, however. Last year it became apparent that Durant may have fake social media accounts which he uses for the purpose of defending himself and for arguing with trolls.

It all started when a Twitter user named Cole Cashwell asked Durant as to why he left the Oklahoma City Thunder team for the Golden State Warriors. Cashwell said – “@KDTrey5 man I respect the hell outta you but give me one legitimate reason for leaving okc other than getting a championship.”

Durant’s reply was strange, to say the least, if only for the fact that he talked in the third person. His first tweet said – “he didn’t like the organization or playing for Billy Donovan. His roster wasn’t that good, it was just him and russ.” His second tweet said – “imagine taking russ off that team, see how bad they were. Kd can’t win a championship with those cats.”

If you think that the two above tweets sound odd, you’re not the only one. Soon after the tweets went live, Harrisonmc15 tweeted saying – “KD has secret accounts that he uses to defend himself and forgot to switch to them when he was replying to this guy I’m actually speechless.”

The tweets have since been deleted but it does indeed seem like Durant forgot to switch accounts before he started defending himself in the third person. It recently came to light that Durant may also have a secret Instagram account for arguing with trolls.

13 Rihanna Quit Instagram After The App Deleted Her Account

Rihanna also quit Twitter temporarily although her case is slightly different, as the talented singer ended up quitting the social media app for a while after Instagram accidentally disabled her account.

So what exactly happened? Well, in May 2014 Rihanna posted a number of rather racy photos. Instagram is known as an app that takes racy photos seriously and often deletes the racy images or else disables the account itself.

The latter seems to have happened to Rihanna although later the representatives of Instagram claimed that Rihanna’s account was disabled due to a glitch according to Entertainment Weekly

“This account was mistakenly caught in one of our automated systems and very briefly disabled. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

In the meantime, a number of impostors created new Instagram accounts, claiming to be none other than the famous singer. Rihanna called out these impostors on her Twitter, saying, according to E Online

“#PHAKE!!!! Let’s be clear, I do NOT have an IG account.”

Rihanna then decided to take the fact that her account was disabled as a sign that she should give Instagram a break.

Indeed, Rihanna did not return to Instagram for six months. According to Billboard, her first post after the six-month absence was a picture of her head turned upside down and captioned as “Hellurrr #badgalback.” She has since been posting regularly, much to the delight of her 60 million fans.

12 Jon Hamm’s Secret Instagram For Following Cute Baby Animal Accounts

Who doesn’t love cute baby animals? The Mad Men actor Jon Hamm certainly does. In fact, he loves cute baby animals so much that he has apparently created a secret Instagram account just so he can follow accounts that post adorable pictures of animals as well as other things that spark joy in him.

Indeed, Hamm has said that the reason that he doesn’t have a personal Instagram account – or any social media account for that matter – is because he is simply not comfortable with the idea of sharing his private life with millions of followers. He wants his private life to remain just that – private.

According to People magazine, Hamm said that he much prefers talking to real people as opposed to people over the screen – “I actually just prefer the act of connection with real people, whether I know them or not. I like talking to people.”

Hamm also said that disengaging with the media is the only way for him to live his life normally – “The only way I can be Zen about it [fame] is to disengage from it. I don’t read about myself on the Internet. Not having a Twitter account is nice. I don’t have to deal with Facebook. I don’t have to deal with any of that stuff and honestly not engaging with it means, for me, it doesn’t really exist.”

However, Hamm admitted that he does have a secret Instagram account too – “I get why people like Instagram. have an Instagram account that I use to follow beautiful places and baby animals and things that make me feel joy.”

11 Justin Bieber Quit Instagram After His Fans went for His Then-Girlfriend Sofia Richie

Justin Bieber is another celebrity who quit social media – and more specifically, Instagram – albeit only temporarily. Back in the summer of 2016, Bieber was dating the model Sofia Richie and Bieber’s fans did not like her at all.

In fact, they kept posting negative comments about her, so much so that Bieber threatened his fans that he’d make his Instagram private.

According to The Guardian, Bieber said –

“I’m gonna make my Instagram private if you guys don’t stop the hate this is getting out of hand, if you guys are really fans you wouldn’t be so mean to people that I like.”

The actress and singer – and Bieber’s ex-girlfriend – Selena Gomez then replied to the post, saying –

“If you can’t handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol – it should be special between you two only. Don’t be mad at your fans. They love you. They were there for you before anyone.”

In August 2016, Bieber ended up shutting down his Instagram account, much to the dismay of his fans. Bieber’s and Richie’s split-up, which came about a month after the singer quit Instagram, did not prompt him to return to the picture-focused social media app. Indeed, at a 2016 November concert, Bieber said that Instagram is “for the devil”.

Still, the singer returned to Instagram in February 2017 and currently has over 99 million followers.

10 Kim Kardashian’s Secret Snapchat For Spying On Friends

It may be hard to believe but Kim Kardashian has a secret Snapchat account. None of her fans knew about this until the reality TV star shared this juicy bit of information in 2016.

According to E News, Kim said, in her friend’s Jonathan Cheban’s Snapchat story – “I’ll talk fast, OK, I didn’t know Snapchat was only 15 seconds,” Kim began. “So I was bored in London. I couldn’t sleep. And then Jonathan had me open up a secret Snap. Do you wanna know why? Jonathan told me that if I followed some of our friends and saw what they really do in their real life, wasted and acting so crazy, I would never be friends with them again. So Jonathan walked me through how to open up a Snapchat in London. Kanye West was snoring in the bed right next to me, not really snoring, passed out. I couldn’t sleep so Jonathan opened up a Snapchat with me over the phone and I started following some friends and saw what they do in their…”

The story cut off there but we assume that Kim was going to finish the sentence with “everyday lives”. So why hasn’t Kim shared her Snapchat? Well, apparently the only reason she is on it is to stalk other people. That, and also for the really cool Snapchat filters.

9 Ed Sheeran Quit Twitter After People Were Mean To Him

In 2015 the singer Ed Sheeran abruptly announced on his Instagram page that he has decided to take a break from all social media as well as his phone. According to The Guardian, Sheeran said – “I’m taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while. I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last five years, but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes, so I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I missed.”

However, he was quick to stress that it was only a break and that he would be back eventually, for he also added –

“The third album is on its way and is the best thing I have made thus far. See you all next autumn, and thank you for being amazing.”

Sheeran returned to social media on the 1st of January 2017 although he has since stopped posting on Twitter due to people’s meanness – he posted his last tweet on the 17th of July 2017. Sheeran said, according to the Telegraph – “I’ve actually come off Twitter completely. I can’t read it. I go on it and there’s nothing but people saying mean things. Twitter’s a platform for that. One comment ruins your day. But that’s why I’ve come off it. The head-f— for me has been trying to work out why people dislike me so much.”

8 Lorde’s Secret Instagram Account Dedicated To Onion Rings

While most people use Instagram to post selfies, there are numerous Instagram accounts dedicated to other things, such as baby animal pictures, memes, and donuts. And it turns out that some of the weirder Instagram accounts out there may be run by celebrities!

Take the Instagram account that was called @onionringsworldwide (“Every onion ring I encounter, rated”) which had pictures of onion rings and captions such as – “Tempura onion ring eaten ceremoniously on a plane from Tennessee to New York,” and “Very good – thick, sweet onion and deliciously chewy batter. Served with a slightly spicy (non-traditional) sauce. 4.5/5″ according to NME.

It then turned out that it was run by none other than the talented singer Lorde. As the account’s name suggests, it was used for reviewing onion rings.

The account was discovered by a New Zealand website. At the time, it had only 24 followers and it seemed that most of them were related to Lorde in some way. In addition, the pictures posted appear to have been taken near where the singer was at the time and the fingers that appear in the images look very much like Lorde’s fingers.

The New Zealand site obviously contacted Lorde’s management team in order to verify that it was indeed the singer who was behind the account. However, no response was given and the account was taken down.

Nonetheless, Lorde later admitted, according to NME, in an interview with Jimmy Fallon that it was indeed her who was behind the weird Instagram account – “I feel like it reads like the kind of thing a pop star would do to look relatable, which I wasn’t doing.”

7 Megan Fox Grew Bored Of Twitter After 5 Days Of Joining

The stunning actress Megan Fox is not exactly an avid user of social media, although she does post on her official Facebook page once or twice a month. Fox also has a Twitter page but never uses it – indeed, it appears that she quit it back in 2013 which is when she posted her last tweet.

Fox joined Twitter on the 3rd of January in 2013. Her first tweet said, “I’m incredibly late to the party but I’m here nonetheless, so what now?”

Fox then proceeded to post a few more tweets, such as,

“Hello, Twitter. How is everyone’s day going? 7:30 am and we’ve watched ‘A Bugs Life’ twice… so mine has been action packed as per usual” and “I guess I should tell you guys to go see ‘This is 40’ while it’s still in theatres. @JuddApatow made a really funny movie. Promise.”

She also posted a few pictures but then on the 9th of January – 13 tweets, 16 replies, 1 retweet and 5 days later, she said – “5 days on Twitter and I have yet to discern it’s purpose. #WhatIsThePoint ???”

Fox has obviously not been tempted to return to the social media platform even though her tweets were shared thousands of times and even though she has garnered over one million followers.

6 Kate Moss’s Secret Instagram Account To Keep Up With The Trends

The supermodel Kate Moss is apparently not a fan of social media. Indeed, she insists that she doesn’t even know how to take a good selfie, which is something we find hard to believe for she always looks stunning in photographs. After all, there’s a reason why Moss is one of the most famous supermodels worldwide and a muse to many photographers.

However, the model has said, according to Harpers Bazaar

“I don’t have a relationship with [social media] at all. I don’t know how to take a good selfie. I’m not good at them.”

Still, Moss wants to stay in the loop, hence why she has created a secret Instagram account which she uses not to spy on people – she is not interested in what other famous people are eating or where they are going on holidays – but rather to keep an eye on trends. The model has said –

“I don’t care about people who post what they’re eating or the weather. I have to, otherwise, I wouldn’t know what anyone was talking about.”

In the same interview, Moss mentioned Snapchat. Don’t get too excited, however – it was her daughter’s Snapchat that she mentioned, and not her own – “My daughter [Lila] is obsessed with Snapchat and now there are all these new filters with the tongue and everything. Have you seen it?”

5 Chrissy Teigen Quits twitter when things got heavy

TV personality and model Chrissy Teigen is no stranger to quitting social media. In 2014, Teigen quit Twitter after posting a gun control tweet that caused quite a controversy.

What happened was this – after October 22nd shootings in Ottawa in Ontario, Teigen posted a tweet that said, according to CNN Entertainment – “Active shooting in Canada, or as we call it in America, Wednesday. That’s not a joke. It is a fact. … I’ve lost faith in this world. Sorry if it comes off as being unemotional. There is just so much bad.”

Soon after her tweet, Teigen started receiving countless hate comments. One social media user said – “You should probably stick to having your picture taken for a living” whereas another one commented with “So, how much of a stupid ***** are you?”

Shortly after, Teigen posted a tweet that said – “I can’t see anything through the sea of hate and anger that is now my Twitter. Seriously I can’t sift through it all. It’s gotten to the point people don’t even see the simplicity of the original tweet and have just wanted to get shaking-mad over something.”

After one social media user posted a tweet that said he hoped her husband would be taken out, Teigen decided to quit Twitter – “I feel sick. Bye Twitter. Taking my talents to Instagram.”

Teigen has since returned to the social media app (she was gone for just a week) but recently the model has quit Snapchat in solidarity with Rihanna who said that Snapchat was shaming victims of domestic violence.

According to Quartz, Teigen tweeted her decision to leave Snapchat, saying – “I stopped using snap. The update, the constant complaints of people not being able to find me, plus the Rihanna poll…no bueno.”

4 Drake’s Secret Snapchat

Drake is another celebrity who likes to keep his private life private. In other words, he is not too keen on sharing his social media accounts with the public. However, it turns out that he does have social media accounts – which are not that secret – and in particular, a secret Snapchat account.

Drake’s secret Snapchat account has been an internet phenomenon for years now but despite his fans’ desperate requests to make his Snapchat name public, the rapper has refused to do so. Indeed, whenever anyone uncovers his Snapchat name, he simply goes ahead and makes a new one.

So, how do we even know that Drake has Snapchat? Well, over the years the rapper has appeared in numerous Snapchat stories but the biggest giveaway was when DJ Khaled said, in a radio interview, that he followed Drake on Snapchat.

According to Capital Xtra, Drake’s fans then went crazy, and started tweeting things such as “Drake has a snapchat, I repeat. Drake has a snapchat, let me say it one more time just so we’re clear. Dadd-, I mean Drake has a snapchat,” and “Soooo Drake got a snapchat and don’t wanna give out his name ok where is the loyalty.” Still, the rapper has not revealed his Snapchat name.

3 Emma Stone Thinks Social Media Is The Modern Version Of “Keeping Up With The Joneses”

Emma Stone quit social media after Twitter hack in 2012 and has decided to never return. Indeed, the actress now claims that she wants to keep her private life to herself and has even compared the constant posting and sharing of her peers on social media to the modern-day version of “keeping up with the Joneses.”

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the talented actress said, according to Christian Today

“It’s that need to be liked, that need to be seen, that need to be validated, in a way, through no one that you know. And so people ask the question about fame, or what it feels like, and it seems like everybody knows what that feels like.”

She continued with, “It seems like everyone’s cultivating their lives on Instagram or on different forms of social media, and what pictures looks best of their day. It’s this very modern ‘keeping up with the Joneses.’ It’s almost impossible to find someone that’s not, in some way, on the Internet.”

In addition, Stone especially dislikes Instagram for the way its users tend to portray their life as “perfect” even though most of the time it is far from that.

According to Elle, Stone said – “That’s why it makes me so crazy to look at social media. When you see people like, ‘This is the best life ever! I couldn’t be happier,’ you’re like, ‘Shut up, that is not true.’ Not everything comes together in the best way ever, every day. It just doesn’t. Even when your dream you set out for comes true, it’s not always perfect… That’s not the reality of life.” We can’t argue with that!

2 Marnie Simpson’s Secret Twitter Under A False Name

Last year – in 2017 – the Geordie Shore star Marnie Simpson revealed that she had a secret Twitter account. And it doesn’t seem like she will be revealing her secret Twitter page’s handle anytime soon, for the fact that it is secret is what, apparently, keeps her sane since it allows her to write whatever is on her mind.

That is understandable, of course – most celebrities can’t afford to share everything that is on their minds for fear of backlash from internet trolls. It can be challenging and nerve-wracking to always censor every single tweet one posts. Indeed, we are surprised that not more celebrities have chosen to keep their Twitter accounts private.

According to Daily Star, Simpson said – “I don’t blame Adele for having a secret Twitter account. I do too. It’s nice to have an account where I can write whatever I want and not get any grief.”

Simpson’s Twitter account is not only private but also under a different name which means that her fans will have a hard time trying to find her. According to Daily Star, Simpson said – “It’s under a different name, so you’ll never find it!” Does anyone want to give it a try?

1 Meghan Markle Quits Social Media After Her Engagement To Prince Harry

It comes as no surprise that once Meghan Markle got engaged to Prince Harry she took down her social media accounts, including her Facebook account, her Twitter account, and her Instagram account. Her fans were naturally devastated – Markle had over a million fans following her on her Instagram page and around 350,000 Twitter followers.

According to BBC, Markle shut down her social media accounts purely because the accounts “haven’t been used for some time”. Of course, we all know that that is not the real reason but we understand the reasoning behind the statement.

In addition, a year before closing her social media accounts,  Markle also shut down her lifestyle website – which she has called her “passion project” – called The Tig.

Markle said, according to Daily Mail – “After close to three beautiful years on this adventure with you, it’s time to say goodbye to The Tig, What began as a passion project (my little engine that could) evolved into an amazing community of inspiration, support, fun, and frivolity. You’ve made my days brighter and filled this experience with so much joy. Keep finding those Tig moments of discovery, keep laughing and taking risks, and keep being “the change you wish to see in the world. Above all, don’t ever forget your worth – as I’ve told you time and time again: you, my sweet friend, you are enough. Thank you for everything.’

Markle posted the above sweet farewell message both on her website and her Instagram page, no doubt causing many of her fans to tear up.
