If this year’s batch of restaurant openings is any indication, the next decade will be delicious. Here, eight of the most anticipated, and exciting, upcoming spots in 2020 that are bound to make the choosiest foodies salivate.
Gage & Tollner
The landmarked space that held the famed Brooklyn steakhouse — which first opened in 1879 and shuttered in 2004 — has since been home to a TGI Fridays, an Arby’s and a clothing store. But restaurateur St. John Frizell is bringing it back to life. He’s teaming up with a husband-and-wife team: builder Ben Schneider and chef Sohui Kim, who plans to update the menu respectfully. “It’s challenging because we are dealing with memories,” says Kim, who is busy elevating classic recipes for she-crab soup and fried chicken. Don’t worry — the gas lamps are staying.

What started as a Long Island institution became a Manhattan phenomenon when it opened in Flatiron last year. Now, the popular Hellenic outpost is expanding to a giant third location, near Hudson Yards. The 200-seat room with a large circular bar will serve up classic fare such as Greek salad, fresh octopus and Mediterranean fish, with a comprehensive raw seafood menu. A wine bar offshoot will also open across the street.

Le Veau d’Or
The duo behind downtown hotspot Frenchette are heading north, and taking over a storied space. Lee Hanson and Riad Nasr, who have helmed famed restaurateur Keith McNally’s kitchens for decades, are moving into the legendary Upper East Side bistro Le Veau d’Or. For inspiration, they say they have been pouring over old menus. “We plan to update and respect LVD’s classic French dishes, which have made the restaurant an enduring part of New York City’s culinary history,” says Nasr.

Former Eleven Madison Park chef de cuisine James Kent and his business partner Jeff Katz are opening a new fine-dining restaurant and cocktail bar above their FiDi favorite Crown Shy, which earned them a Michelin star within the first nine months. They’ve named the intimate spot on the 63rd floor using letters from their respective children’s monikers and will offer seasonal, multicourse tasting menus.
70 Pine St., early spring
Tavola della Nonna
The pizza oven and surrounding bar will be the focal point of this rustic Italian trattoria, which will make its home near Lincoln Center. Chef Stratos Georgedakis, who served as executive chef at Quality Meats, will also whip up crowd-pleasers such as cacio e pepe and steak Florentine for two.

On the heels of their success with the buzzy Lower East Side eatery Chinese Tuxedo, chefs Eddy Buckingham and Jeff Lam are continuing their love affair with Southeast Asian cuisine. “We will be challenging people’s perceptions of curry,” Buckingham, who was born in Singapore, says of the upcoming 70-seat spot. On the menu? Fragrant curries from Malaysia and northern Thailand, which will be served with a signature chicken-and-shrimp relish, coconut and crispy betel leaves.

Joining Jean-Georges Vongerichten and David Chang at the Seaport District’s burgeoning Pier 17, chef Andrew Carmellini will team with longtime partners Josh Pickard and Luke Ostrom to unveil a sleek Italian chophouse. They’re staying mum about the menu, but the space will be designed by the Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, known for luxe, stunning spots.

The pair of Eleven Madison Park alums are planning a three-floor, 60-seat restaurant serving cutting-edge American fare. Wilson, the former wine director, and Johnson, a veteran chef who also did stints at the NoMad and Frenchie in Paris, say the first level will be casual, while the upper floors will offer elaborate tasting menus. It’s opening in the historic Tribeca townhouse where John Lennon and Yoko Ono once had their “Nutopian Embassy.”
