‘Social media is everything,’ Huda, who is currently seeking a PR executive to join her Dubai team, admits.
‘It’s transformed the business. We first started using Facebook when we launched the brand and saw how traffic to our blog just skyrocketed,’ she said of her and her two sisters Mona and Alya.
Although Huda started out with just one platform, once she started using Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat they all became ‘the driving force behind the success of the brand, particularly Instagram which is now our biggest platform,’ she admits.
Huda explains that her company would have never been able to grow as quickly as it did, let alone reach millions of consumers without using social media, going so far to say that it’s the main reason she was able to become the entrepreneur she is today.
‘Word of mouth can only get you so far, so I really am indebted to social media sites for giving me a platform to reach so many people and create a business out of a hobby,’ she said of Huda Beauty.
‘It wasn’t as though we were using social media platforms to leverage the brand – we grew alongside social media and are continuing to grow and evolve at the same rate as social media,’ she confessed.
These platforms are so important to Huda in fact, when she creates new products, she asks her social media followers what they want.
As for some advice to those looking to get hired, Huda says your presence on every social platform is detrimental, even admitting that when she’s hiring a prospective candidate the first thing she does is check all of their social accounts.

Hiring: Huda says your presence on every social platform is detrimental and when she’s hiring a prospective candidate the first thing she does is check all of their social accounts
‘Your social presence is super important!’ she exclaims. ‘We always check LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook before we invite candidates in for an interview – it helps me understand what kind of person they are.’
When creating a social media presence or personality, Huda says that the more unique you are the better admitting, ‘Having a uniqueness to you will make you stand out for sure. For creative jobs like photographers and content creators, I love seeing unique and creative content that inspires me.’
Besides having a social presence Huda says the two other most important aspects are attitude and passion which she says are non-negotiable because she hires people who have a ‘positive, can-do attitude’ while being passionate and wanting ‘to change the world of beauty.’
‘Positivity can change everything from how you approach a situation to how you manage other people so attitude is really important to me. One thing I can’t stand is when I hear someone say something isn’t possible,’ she admits.
‘It makes me crazy to hear this because we’re proving every day that anything is possible. I am really drawn to people who are self-managed, who I can trust to just run with a project and own it,’ she continued.
Huda shared advice for people trying to succeed in business and says the key is the people you surround yourself with: ‘You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,’ Huda says. ‘Focus on the right things and surround yourself with the right people.
Huda Kattan’s top tips for becoming a successful businesswoman
1. Social presence: When hiring prospective candidates, Huda admits she always checks LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook before inviting people in for an interview because: ‘It helps me understand what kind of person they are.’
2. Attitude: Huda explains that being positive is important because it shoes how you ‘manage other people,’ admitting that one thing she can’t stand is hearing someone say ‘it’s not possible.’
3. Passion: You have to really care about what you’re doing in order to succeed and Huda admits that she is always looking for people who are passionate and ‘want to change the world.’
‘Your surroundings are super important so you want to spend your time with people who uplift and inspire you and are constantly challenging you. It’s very easy to absorb the energy around you, so you need to make sure that energy around you is positive and upbeat,’ she explains.
In order to become an entrepreneur there are different ways you can achieve success and Huda believes, ‘There is great power in planning and routines and because of that I am super efficient and get a lot done in a day.
‘I always set time aside for personal planning in the evenings and mornings and once I get to the office, I always keep 30 minutes aside for myself to plan for the day ahead and get into the right mind set. If I don’t plan in advance then I can run into problems because I don’t feel prepared.
Although being a businesswoman sounds like the ideal life it’s not as easy as it seems and Huda wants people to know, ‘An entrepreneur also needs to be ready to sacrifice a lot.
‘Starting a business means passing on amazing opportunities sometimes and dedicating yourself 100 per cent to your vision. When you really want something you have to work for it and never give up,’ she details.
As for her last bit of advice for those trying to become a mogul, ‘Authenticity is also very important. You don’t need to be flawless, but you need to own your flaws. It makes you relatable as a boss and a mentor,’ Huda advised.
