Big bookstores are on the decline in New York City. In the past decade, chains like Borders have been wiped out, and Barnes & Noble has lost four stores in the city since 2014.
But at the same time, book lovers are setting up their own shops. Instead of sterile mega stores with a Starbucks tucked inside, these new haunts have personality.
“The cool thing about indie bookstores is that they each have a different feel,” says Colleen Callery, marketing manager at Brooklyn’s Books Are Magic.
