The Force is with him.
One terminal hospice patient whose dying wish was to see the upcoming “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” sequel with his son, ahead of the film’s projected Dec. 20 release date, will see his dream come true, Disney confirmed on Thanksgiving.
The patient’s last request came to light Tuesday as Rowans Hospice in Hampshire, England, made the plea on Twitter: “Can you help?”
They continued, “Sadly, time is not on his side for the 20th Dec. His wish is to see the final Star Wars film #RiseOfSkywalker with his young son. If you know ANYBODY who might be able to make it happen, please share with them. Thank you.”
Social media was on the dying father’s side with more than 1,800 likes. Actor Mark Hamill, who was tagged in their tweet along with director JJ Abrams, wished Rowans Hospice “good luck” in making this man’s wish a reality.
On Thursday, Disney’s Chairman and CEO Robert Iger publicly addressed their appeal on Twitter: “On this Thanksgiving, we at @Disney are grateful to be able to share #TheRiseOfSkywalker with a patient and his family @RowansHospice. May the force be with you and with us all!”
In a statement by Rowans Hospice, health care support worker Lisa Davies, who first made the clinic aware of the patient’s wish, said she is “utterly speechless” at Disney’s gesture, and thanked social media for bringing attention to their plea.
“The response from everyone, including the Star Wars community, has been absolutely phenomenal over the last few days,” Davies continued. “So a massive thank you to every single person that has shared our post and given their time to help make this possible.”
In response to Iger’s tweet directly on Thursday, they also wrote on Twitter, “I wish we had the words to sum up what it means to the patient, the family & us. Everyone we spoke to at @Disney were as eager to make this happen as we were. Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving to you, your family & your colleagues. May the force be with you #WeAreTheSpark.”
“The Rise of Skywalker,” the Star Wars franchise’s ninth and final installment, premieres on Dec. 19 in the UK, and the following day in US theaters.
