First UK restaurant outside south England gets a 3rd Michelin star

Michelin guide 2022 revealed: Cumbrian restaurant becomes first in UK outside of London and Berkshire to be awarded a rare third star – while Staffordshire eatery that’s only been open 4 months also wins the accolade

  • L’Enclume in Cartmel, run by Chef Patron Simon Rogan,  has become the only new restaurant in UK to be awarded a third star in this year’s Michelin guide
  • First time in the guide’s century-long history a UK restaurant has been awarded a third star that isn’t in London, Bray or Reading, in a win for the North West
  • Ynyshir in Machynlleth became first restaurant in Wales to ever get two stars
  • Upstairs by Tom Shepherd has been awarded 1 star after trading for only fours months

A Cumbrian restaurant has become the first in the UK north of London to be awarded a rare third Michelin star.

This year’s guide saw L’Enclume in Cartmel, run by Chef Patron Simon Rogan, become the only new restaurant in the UK to be awarded the prestigious third star, joining the likes of Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Sketch (The Lecture Room & Library), and Core by Clare Smyth.

All the other restaurants with three stars are currently in London or Bray – where Heston Blumenthal has the The Fat Duck restaurant and  Alain Roux has The Waterside Inn pub.

In Michelin’s 118 year history of publishing the guide, all restaurants to get three stars have been in London or Berkshire – meaning  L’Enclume is making history.

The restaurant serves the likes of Roe deer in coal oil, seaweed custard with beef broth and bone marrow,  and Fritter of Duroc pig and smoked eel.

Taking to Twitter following the announcements, Chef Simon Rogan said today: ‘Words cannot express the joy that I’m feeling! Thank you to Michelin Guide UK and to everyone at L’Enclume, thank you a thousand times. #threemichelinstars’

 LOST STARS

  •  Celeste at the Lanesborough

In total there are 132 restaurants in the world with three Michelin stars, seven of which are in the UK.

They include – Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester and Hélène Darroze at The Connaught. The Araki in London previously held three stars but dramatically lost them all in 2020, while Chez Nico in Reading was one of the only restaurants outside of London to hold all three before closing in 1999.

Elsewhere in the guide, Ynyshir in Machynlleth, became the first restaurant in Wales to ever get two stars.

The guide has previously been criticised for being too focused on London – with the majority of its British restaurants in the capital.

However, in the latest sign that it’s moving away from it’s focus on London and the south a restaurant in Staffordshire got its first star despite only being open four months.

Upstairs by Tom Shepherd has been awarded 1 Michelin Star by the Michelin Guide UK & Ireland, after trading for only 4 months.

Elsewhere in the guide, Ynyshir in Machynlleth, became the first restaurant in Wales to ever get two stars (pictured one of their dishes)

Ikoyi in St James’s, London  and Jeremy Chan was promoted from one star to two. The London restaurant became the first in the UK to be awarded the prestigious ‘One To Watch Award’ by World 50 Best Restaurants in Septmeber, the African-inspired eatery in the West End, picked up the gong sponsored by American Express, making it among the best restaurants in the world

The restaurant opened its doors in October to much acclaim, serving contemporary dishes from a beautiful first-floor restaurant in Lichfield, Staffordshire.

Tom told FEMAIL: ‘I’m absolutely elated that we’ve been awarded a Michelin star, especially given we’ve only been in operation for four months. In addition, being the first ever Michelin Starred restaurant in Staffordshire only adds to the enormity of the achievement.’

Tom’s flavour led dishes are based on a modern take of classical cooking, utilising the best seasonal British ingredients, with subtle hints of Asia. The flagship tasting menu of seven courses includes dishes like Orkney Scallop, Salsa Verde, Apple, Dashi and Highland Venison, Sausage, Black Garlic, Jerusalem Artichoke and the signature Thai Green Curry ‘transition’ course.

Meanwhile, Celeste at the Lanesborough in London was the only restaurant to lose a star. The upmarket hotel and Instagram hot spot serves the likes of Pumpkin Agnolotti, Crispy Lobster and Artichoke salad (food pictured)

The Clove Club in Shoreditch, east London was also promoted to two stars. Pictured is their Tartare of Torbay Prawns with Cambodian Long Pepper, Japanese Quince and Dulse

Upstairs by Tom Shepherd in  Lichfield, Staffordshire also picked up an award despite only being open four months

Before the pandemic, the red book would have been launched at an awards ceremony to celebrate, but this year’s launch was  through Instagram, Twitter and the Michelin Guide website.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides, said the guide was  ‘disappointed’ not to host the event in person, but they would still be a celebration of the country’s top chefs, ‘who have fought hard not only to survive, but to excel in these challenging times’

‘To award so many new Stars this year, including one new Three Star, is testament to the determination and resilience of those working in the hospitality industry – not just the chefs, but those involved at every level.’
